Student Spotlight: Chelsa Adams

What made you decide to change your major to Sport Management?

I originally came to Wichita State University for Dental Hygiene but quickly discovered that the health field was NOT for me. I have always had a passion for sports but the thought of working in the industry never crossed my mind until I met some students who sparked my interest in the program after speaking so highly of it. I scheduled an appointment with Kayla to get more information, with no intention of changing my major but ended up walking out of the office enrolled in my first semester of sport management classes.

Tell us about your internship in Alaska. How did you get it?

I am spending my last semester with the Alaska Aces as the Community Relations and Promotions Assistant. My responsibilities include handling all mascot and player appearances, community outreach, and promoting the organizations image in a positive way! I have always been very involved within my community and it was important to find a position that would allow me to continue doing so.

If you were asked about your time in the program, how would you describe your experience?

This program has provided me with more opportunities than I could ever imagine. The department is continually posting job openings, internships, and even volunteer opportunities if you need that extra step to get your foot in the door.
My favorite part of the program thus far was when we went to Kansas City for a Sporting KC game. The atmosphere in the cauldron was unlike anything I have ever experienced at a sporting event...and to experience it with my best friends made it THAT much more fun!

What do you plan to do after you finish the program?

My internship has landed me a full-time position with the Alaska Aces so I will be embracing the cold making a permanent move to the 49th state!
