Passing time
Seventy-nine years later, the dying wish of Lucetta Carter, an early supporter of Fairmount College and its library, is made a reality. After giving away her last penny, she asked that a sundial be placed at her grave. Wichitan Melody Manlove portrayed Carter during the dedication ceremony Oct. 18 at Maple Grove Cemetery. Carter supported Fairmount College’s library by donating more than 1,500 books and money and in 1894 helped found the Fairmount Ladies’ Library Club, which still meets today. WSU’s Library Associates, the Wichita-Sedgwick Historical Museum and the Wichita Bibliophiles raised $1,600 to purchase the sundial.
