Art inspires dance

The School of Performing Arts dance program is pairing up with WSU art and design faculty and guests from other universities to present the Kansas Dance Festival Nov. 20-21.

Nielsen, a New York City-based choreographer for numerous dance companies who perform worldwide — including his own company Douglas Nielsen Dances — has created a premiere work for the Kansas Dance Festival titled “Leaving the Scene.”

Three WSU dance faculty have choreographed dances inspired by works by WSU artists. The dances and art works are:

•Denise Celestin’s dance “Mirror”/the painting “Mirror (from Montone)” by Ron Christ.

•“Screen Test” by C. Nicholas Johnson/David Kohan’s abstract “Domain.” In an unusual artistic maneuver, the dancers will jump out of the “movie” image of Kohan’s work and onto the stage.

•Teresa Wylie McWilliams’ original modern dance “Stillness Spread”/drawings by Jill Eggers.

Other universities scheduled to perform at the dance festival are Kansas State University, University of Arizona, Sam Houston State University and Friends University.

Performances are 7:30 p.m. Nov. 20 and 21 in Miller Concert Hall. Tickets are $8 general public, $6 for WSU faculty and staff, non-WSU students and seniors; and $5 for WSU students. Call ext. 3233 for reservations.
