Editor’s note: As President Hughes concludes his tenure as WSU president Dec. 31, Inside WSU offered him an opportunity to bid the university community farewell. For a review of his tenure at WSU, see the story, “Hughes ends five-year presidency Dec. 31.” Dear WSU Colleague: The days are drawing close as I write these words, a time when Margaret Ann and I will be moving to the next chapter of our life together. It is time for us to say thank you. We never would have dreamed in 1993 how rich and rewarding our experiences would be as we became the University’s eleventh president and first lady. The warmth we have enjoyed from the campus community has had an impact on us that surely will last a lifetime. We owe all of you who work for the University our profound gratitude. We are appreciative of the energy, dedication and commitment we have seen throughout the campus community toward the goal of making the University a great place for our students and one of the finest metropolitan universities in the nation. In 1993 it was my privilege to have been recognized as an honorary Native American. On the occasion when this title was bestowed, we learned that they have no word for goodbye. Instead, they say HA’ A’ GO’ O’ NE: farewell, but our paths will cross again. And thus, we conclude our days at WSU by saying to all of you HA’ A’ GO’ O’ NE.
Sincerely yours,
Eugene M. Hughes President
