Senate changes general ed committee By Amy Geiszler-Jones Faculty Senate agreed to make two changes to its general education committee, but got stuck in discussions when it came to allowing the committee to develop guidelines for further studies courses. In its meeting Nov. 23, the senate agreed to change the status of the committee’s non-voting members to those of a standing advisory sub-committee and allow the nine voting faculty members to be reappointed without a three-year hiatus from the committee. Time ran out at the meeting before the senate could reach a consensus on allowing the committee to develop guidelines for further studies courses. Currently any department or college wanting to list such a course can do so without any approval. That policy has led to 253 such courses being listed in the catalog. That pales with the 64 introductory courses and the 27 issues and perspectives courses offered under the general ed curriculum. Those classes are more tightly controlled. In other business: • Senate President Elmer Hoyer announced Beth King, vice president for university advancement, wants faculty input on when to hold President-select Donald Beggs’ inauguration at the Metropolitan Complex. Proposed times are early afternoon Thursday, May 13, or early or late afternoon Friday, May 14, preceding commencement. • Hoyer said that recent revisions to the academic calendar made by the Board of Regents did not affect the spring semester, which has no study day scheduled. Generally, one day separates the end of the semester and finals, allowing for test preparations. • Sens. Diane Huntley and Will Klunder are taking faculty suggestions on the proposed parking plan. The two are the faculty representatives to the recently formed campus-wide task force on parking.
