OF NOTE GrantsDavid Alexander, executive director, Lake Afton Public Observatory, and professor, physics; and Catherine Yeotis, assistant professor, curriculum and instruction, received $87,445 from the Kansas Board of Regents for the project “STAMPEDE: Science, Technology and Mathematics-Propelling Education Directives Toward Excellence.” Michael Papadakis, associate professor, aerospace engineering, and Bombardier/ Learjet fellow, received $151,565 from NASA/Lewis for the project “Tailplane Icing Program - Phase II.” James Snyder, professor, psychology, received $10,000 from the Mental Health Association of South Central Kansas Inc. for the project “Evaluation of Family and Schools Together Program - 1999.”
Creative Activity Harold Popp, professor of music, had his work, “Pieces from the Wood Box,” open a concert at the New Music Festival at Florida State University Feb. 6. Some 300 composers internationally submitted more than 300 works for inclusion; only 50 were chosen. On March 20, the U.S. Army Band “Pershing’s Own” will perform the third commission Popp has received from the Ft. Meyer, Va.-based band. During spring break, Popp will perform his trombone chamber compositions in recitals at Louisiana Tech and Northwest Louisiana State University. Awards Terri Wylie McWilliams, assistant professor of dance, received the meritorious achievement award for “Babes in Arms” choreography at the regional eight-state American College Theatre Festival. “Shakespeare’s Journey,” written by Leroy Clark, chair, School of Performing Arts, was selected for a staged reading at the regional ACTF. Joyce Cavarozzi, associate professor of theater, introduced short plays and announced one of the awards. Dan Williams, performing arts technical director, was an adjudicator for all the set load-ins for six plays. David Blatt, associate professor of theater, was co-chair of the ACTF design area, setting up the exhibition of student works, hosting Broadway designer Ming Cho Lee, and presenting awards. Betty Monroe, associate professor of theater, was active with the Costume Parade, with WSU students modelling 24 costumes from WSU productions “Babes in Arms,” “Shakespeare’s Journey,” and “Tartuffe.” PresentationsMel Kahn, professor of political science, gave an invited presentation, “Alexander Hamilton and Effective Leadership,” for the Leadership for a Democratic Society Program for Senior Executives at the Federal Executive Institute in Charlottesville, Va., Jan. 8. Accreditation The collaborative master of public health degree program among WSU and the University of Kansas Schools of Medicine in Kansas City and Wichita has been accredited by the Council of Education for Public Health. The five-year certification is the maximum term possible for a first-time accreditation review. The program offers the only MPH degree in Kansas. Jobs
