Hook up to WSU’s low-cost Internet service

By Amy Geiszler-Jones

A new Internet and e-mail service that brings the university’s electronic services to you has made its debut at WSU.

The service, known as Shocknet2 and provided by University Computing, is limited to current students, faculty, staff and retirees.

Shocknet2 provides dial-in access to campus computing resources, such as the library and IBM mainframe, and allows users to download the latest Web browsers, virus-prevention software and other applications, according to Mike Erickson, assistant director/technical services with University Computing.

Other Internet service providers, including the original Shocknet service provided by CampusMCI, don’t allow users to the same level of access to campus resources. Campus-computing access is unavailable with other services, also. Users of the original Shocknet service who want this new campus-computing connection will need to cancel their previous accounts and sign up for Shocknet2, says Erickson.

Shocknet2’s other features include reliable, high-speed access and low cost. While most commercial Internet services cost an average $20 monthly, Shocknet2’s services will cost $40 for six months or $75 for 12 months, providing 100 hours of online time per month.

It provides for connection speeds of up to 56k. Both IBM-compatible and Macintosh connections are supported. More information, including how to configure your system once you have registered, is available online, www.wichita.edu/shocknet2, or at the main floor dispatch window in Jabara Hall.

In order to register you must have a Shocker ID card and an e-mail address provided through University Computing. You must register online, print the payment form and make your payment at the cashier’s window in Jardine Hall.

An e-mail help line is available at sn2help@twsu.edu, or phone the help desk at WSU-4SN2 (978-4762).
