Wayne Bryan stars in ‘Candide’

 If you’ve ever wondered about the meaning of life come see “Candide,” Voltaire’s dazzling story of adventure, passion, despair and joy and hear the Leonard Bernstein’s brilliant operatic score this weekend. Performances are at 7:30 p.m. Feb. 5-6 and at 3 p.m. Feb. 7 in Miller Concert Hall.

Music Theatre of Wichita’s artistic director Wayne Bryan will guest star as Dr. Pangloss in WSU’s Opera Theatre Series performance. Pangloss’ philosophy, “Since this is the best of all possible worlds, it follows that everything that happens is for the best,” guides Candide on his epic voyage of self-discovery.

Separated by war from the love of his life, Cunegonde, Candide follows her across Europe, to the New World and finally is reunited with her in Constantinople. His travels take him across oceans, into jungles and through the spectrum of human emotions, from youthful passion through disillusionment and despair, and finally to a joyful embrace of life's contradictions.

“Candide” is a collaborative effort of the WSU School of Music and School of Performing Arts.

The production contains mature themes and should be suitable for those 13 years and older.

Tickets start at $10, with discounts for the WSU community, other students and senior citizens.
