Creative Activity

Judith Saxton, assistant professor of trumpet, School of Music, was the guest soloist with the WSU Wind Ensemble during their March 6 concert during American Bandmaster’s conference week. She performed "Napoli" by Herman Bellstedt. She also was the guest artist soloist with the Wichita Symphony Orchestra March 23 and 24. She was the guest for the pre-concert talk and performed Haydn’s Trumpet Concerto in Eb.

Publications

Connie Dalrymple, assistant professor and life and health sciences librarian, and Janet Dagenais Brown, associate professor and education and social sciences librarian, both of WSU Libraries, co-authored the chapters "Translating English into Computerese: An Exercise in Building Keyword Search Statements for Library Databases" and "Let’s Go Database Fishing: Introducing Databases and Basic Keyword Search Techniques" for the book "Teaching Information Literacy Concepts: Activities and Frameworks from the Field."

Sha Li Zhang, associate professor and technical services division head, WSU Libraries, was reappointed editor-in-chief for International Leads, a publication of the American Library Association’s International Relations Roundtable. She’ll serve a second two-year term. International Leads is published quarterly and distributed to more than 800 members and other subscribers worldwide.

Several College of Education faculty and staff members made presentations at the Kansas Reading Association Conference in Wichita Feb. 15: "The ABCs of spelling" and "Language development and its ties to literacy (Beyond Baby Talk)" by Kenn Apel, "Getting caught in the Web" by Marsha Gladhart and Lynn Elder, "Enhancing phonological awareness and emergent literacy skills" by Barbara Hodson, "Ideas for expanding students’ knowledge of words and meaning vocabulary" by Dennis Kear, "Reading and spelling skills: Language processing indicators" by Kathy Strattman, and "Kidspiration-Inspiring young readers" by Tonya Witherspoon.

Connie Dalrymple, assistant professor and life and health sciences librarian, and Janet Dagenais Brown, associate professor and education and social sciences librarian, both of WSU Libraries, co-presented "Care and Feeding of a Credit Course in Information Literacy: Evolution of a Student Centered Syllabus" at the Kansas Library Association’s Library Instruction Roundtable workshop in Salina, Kan.

Becky Langrall, assistant professor, curriculum and instruction, presented "Spurs and constraints of professional growth: Four case studies of exceptional middle school teachers" at the Denver meeting of the Association of Teacher Educators.

Vicki Worrell, assistant professor, kinesiology and sport studies, presented "To infinity and beyond: Assessment tools for K-12 physical education" and "How to get off the Yellow Brick Road – Advocacy ideas for promoting your program" at regional conferences of the American Alliance of Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance in Rapid City, S.D., and Baltimore.

Grants

The following faculty have received university research/creative projects grant awards for $4,500 for fiscal year 2003: John Carter, associate professor, physical therapy, "Optimal Whole Wheat Tumor Prevention;" David Eichhorn, assistant professor, chemistry, "Amide-Thiolate Complexes as Models for the Nitrile Hydratase Active Site;" Mary Sue Foster, professor, School of Art and Design, "Textile Study Project, Ghana, Africa;" Charles Koeber, assistant professor, sociology, "The Employment Mobility of Displaced Workers in the New Economy;" and Michael Long, professor, public health sciences, "A Pilot Study to Develop and Validate a Patient Classification System That Will Aid in Determining Implant Specifications in Hip Replacement Patients." Darwin Dorr, professor, psychology, received $4,467 for "The Investigation of Psychological and Social Characteristics of Juvenile Offenders."

Elections

Janet Harrah, director, Center for Economic Development and Business Research, has been elected to the board of directors of the Association for University Business and Economic Research.

In the news

Ted Ayres, general counsel, was quoted in a Feb. 6 Wichita Eagle article, "Molina, Christensen settle suit," saying he was pleased to hear of former Shocker pitcher Ben Christensen’s settlement with former Evansville player Anthony Molina. A ball Christensen threw hit Molina in the face in April 1999.

Phillip Thomas, professor, history, was pictured in the Jan. 10 Clark Co. Clipper. Thomas was scheduled to give a talk "A Man Works from Sun to Sun, A Woman’s Work is Never Done." Thomas also was scheduled to be the featured speaker at the Greensburg Chamber of Commerce annual meeting according to the Jan. 9 Kiowa Co. Signal. Thomas also was cited in a Jan. 24 Clark Co. Clipper article regarding an upcoming presentation at an annual meeting of the Clark County Conservation District in Ashland, Kan.

Janet Harrah, director, Center for Economic Development and Business Research, was quoted in a Jan. 14 Arkansas City Traveler article, "Study: Wichita’s job losses rank high nationally." Harrah doesn’t think the job cuts will be as severe as the Milken study predicts.

Skip Loper, interim executive director, National Institute for Aviation Research, was quoted in a Jan. 24 Cheney Times-Sentinel article, "FAA honors Wichita State University’s aviation institute." Loper said the FAA award recognizes the high quality of research conducted by NIAR staff and faculty from the colleges of engineering and liberal arts and sciences who work through NIAR.

Diane Quantic, associate professor, English, was cited in a Jan. 26 Winfield Daily Courier article, "Book on American Indians to be discussion topic." Quantic was to lead a discussion at the Winfield Public Library.

Gerald Graham, R.P. Clinton Distinguished Professor of Management, wrote a column published in the Wichita Business Journal Feb. 1 titled "Welch’s philosophy: Leadership defined by quality of employees." His column in the Feb. 15 WBJ was titled "After the honeymoon: For new leaders, tests from employees are inevitable." His March 1 column was "How to build trust in your leadership."

Diane Thomas Lincoln, assistant professor, School of Art and Design, and Jeanine Hathaway, associate professor, English, were quoted in a Feb. 9, Wichita Eagle article, "The power of art." Lincoln said art provides an opportunity for artists and their audiences to increase understanding of different cultures. Hathaway said that deciding to write or read poetry is like deciding to pray.

Mark McCain, general manager, KMUW radio, was quoted in a Feb. 12 Wichita Eagle article, "Brouhaha over Keillor’s ‘Almanac’ ends with show’s return." McCain said "The Writer’s Almanac" is rarely the target of serious listener outrage.

Skip Loper, NIAR interim executive director, wrote the column "Aviation research is vital to economy" published in the Feb. 13 Wichita Eagle. Loper said Kansans should consider the aviation industry’s proposal for a new WSU research facility as an investment in economic development.

Ron Matson, associate professor, sociology, was quoted in a Feb. 14 Wichita Eagle article, "Truly Treasured Letters of Love." Matson said writing a love letter doesn’t have to be intimidating.

Peer Moore-Jansen, associate professor, anthropology, was cited in a Feb. 17 Wichita Eagle article, "Legend of mass killing entices Kansas researchers." The article explained how Moore-Jansen and a group of WSU anthropology students are overseeing an archaeological dig to see if they might unearth a mass gravesite where it is rumored several black mine workers were killed and buried more than a century ago during a strike of white union workers. Moore-Jansen was quoted in a similar article in the Jan. 22 Johnson County Legal Record and in the Jan. 13 Pittsburg Morning Sun article "Unearthing history."

Albert Goldbarth, Adele Davis Distinguished Professor of Humanities, was cited in a Feb. 17 Wichita Eagle article, "WSU’s Goldbarth up for prestigious poetry award." Goldbarth was among the finalists for the National Book Critics Circle Award for poetry.

President Don Beggs and Skip Loper, NIAR interim executive director, were sources in a Feb. 18 Wichita Eagle article, "Legislators: We’d fund WSU research, but ..." Beggs said the legislators think the proposal is a good one but wonder where the money will come from to fund it. Loper said if WSU’s facilities aren’t improved, aircraft manufacturers might move their research to other states and aircraft construction programs likely would follow.

Grier Jones, head men’s golf coach, was quoted in a Feb. 19 Wichita Eagle article, "Club aerobics." Jones said the team’s required aerobics class gets the students up at 5:30 a.m. three days a week and many golf tournaments require early starts. The stretching and conditioning also helps.

Janet Harrah, CEDBR director, was quoted about the importance of quality schools in attracting businesses and employees in the Feb. 15 Wichita Business Journal article "Weighing USD 259." In a March 1 article, she talked about the jump in air cargo arriving and leaving Wichita’s airport signaling local economic recovery.

Michael Erickson and Gary Ott of University Computing and John Matrow of the High Performance Computing Center were featured sources in the Feb. 22 Wichita Business Journal story "With Internet2, WSU joins effort to build next generation Internet."

Susan Hendrich, state training coordinator for children’s mental health, was quoted as an expert on retreats in the Feb. 22 Wichita Business Journal article "Company retreats must have a mix of team-building and hard work." "When people feel a sense of loyalty and belonging to a team, they’re much happier and productive," said Hendrich, who leads about one retreat each month.

Philip Gaunt, professor and director, Interdisciplinary Communication Research Institute, was featured in the Feb. 22 Wichita Business Journal article "WSU research institute doing study on employment of disabled workers." ICRI has received a grant for the study.

Janet Harrah, director of the Center for Economic Development and Business Research, was interviewed on KMUW radio Feb. 13 about the KAKE/WSU indexes. She also was on the KWCH TV-12 morning show Feb. 18 to talk about the Wichita economy.

Ted Ayres, general counsel and WSU historic preservation committee member, was a source in the Feb. 20 Wichita Eagle article "School to dedicate bridge 70 years late." Ayres said the George Washington Bicentennial Memorial Bridge at WSU is part of the university’s fascinating history.

Skip Loper, NIAR interim executive director, and Dennis Siginer, College of Engineering dean, were sources in the Feb. 20 Wichita Eagle article "WSU makes case for aviation funds." Loper said new funding is needed if NIAR will be able to adequately serve the area’s plane manufacturers. Siginer said the economy could suffer a hard blow if aviation companies moved more of their research projects and construction programs elsewhere. Joe Mitchell, director of NIAR’s crash lab, was pictured with Sen. Sam Brownback during a tour of the facility. Loper also was quoted in a Feb. 8 Wichita Business Journal article, "Aviation institute needs research dollars." Loper said there’s a misconception that the $20 million the aviation industry is asking the state to provide NIAR is a form of corporate welfare.

Deandre Morris, admissions representative, was quoted in the Feb. 24 Wichita Eagle article "Hopefuls get college facts at expo." Morris said although many college students want to get away from home, Wichita State wants to be sure kids know that WSU has a lot to offer.

Jim Schaus, director of athletics, was a major source for the Feb. 24 Wichita Eagle article "Goodbye Levitt, hello Koch." The article talked about what fans need to know about the 20 months between home basketball games in WSU’s arena, while renovation and construction is under way.

Jon Engelhardt, dean, College of Education, wrote a commentary in the Feb. 25 Wichita Eagle titled "How about paying student teachers?" Engelhardt said a bottom-line issue for most persons preparing for a career as a teacher is how to generate enough financial support, especially during the student-teaching internship.

Janet Harrah, CEDBR director; Bob Lane, coordinator of alternative certification; Sharon Iorio, associate dean, Fairmount College of Liberal Arts and Sciences; and Christine Schneikart-Luebbe, dean of enrollment services; were sources for a Feb. 27 Wichita Eagle article, "Layoffs boost WSU’s numbers." The article featured some reasons for WSU’s high spring enrollment.
