Leaving Levitt

The Shocker men’s and women’s basketball teams closed out Levitt Arena in grand style last week with wins for both teams. After 47 years and 685 games, the arena, which originally opened in 1955 as the WSU Field House, closed after the final men’s basketball game of the season Feb. 25.

Field studio for exhibit opens in mall

WSU’s Decorative Arts Guild is having an open house for its new Sacred Space Field Studio and Gallery at Towne West Square. Part of the space will be a work study area for creating a groundbreaking exhibition, "Sacred Space: A Collaborative Exhibition," April 4-Aug. 6 at WSU’s Ulrich Museum of Art.


Fine arts attorney to speak at alumni breakfast

Alumna Deametrice Eyster’s professional journeys have led her from nursing to law to theater. Starting out in surgical nursing and nursing education, Eyster later returned to college, graduating from Wichita State as an Emory Lindquist scholar, summa cum laude, with a degree in philosophy in 1993.

 


Mozart opera transported to ‘Star Trek’ future

An 18th century opera will be transformed into a 21st century science fiction adventure in WSU’s production of "The Magic Flute" at 7:30 p.m. Thursday-Saturday, March 14-16, and 3 p.m. Sunday, March 17, in Miller Concert Hall.


Scholar offers view on modern art show

Independent scholar Laurette McCarthy plants to set the record straight on Walter Pach’s role in the historic Armory Show held in 1913 in New York City, Chicago and Boston. She will give her presentation as part of WSU’s Art and Architecture Series at 7 p.m. Thursday, March 14, in 210 McKnight Art Center. Admission is free.


Teacher ed team visits

The WSU community is invited to an open meeting with an accreditation site-visit team examining teacher preparation at WSU at 3:45 p.m. Monday, March 11, in 223 Hubbard Hall.

 

Parents, prep for college

Parents of high school juniors who want information about college preparation should go to the free "Preparing for College" seminar at 7 p.m. Tuesday, March 12, in 211 Hubbard Hall. Topics include identifying college interests, researching colleges, financing a college education, and learning what pitfalls to avoid. For reservations or information, call Malinda Jones, 978-3168.

Inside goes on break

Because of spring break March 18-24, Inside WSU will not be published in two weeks. Instead, the next issue will be in three weeks, March 28. The deadline for that issue is Monday, March 18.

Dr. Laurence Rubenstein from Los Angeles, one of the leading experts in falls among older adults, will give a free, public lecture on "Preventing Falls in Older Persons" at 7 p.m. Thursday, March 21, in the Hughes Metropolitan Complex.
