Grants

Alex Chaparro, associate professor, psychology, was awarded $3,500 by Larksfield Place for the "Red Cross Visual Assessment Project."

Barbara Chaparro, director, psychology’s software usability research lab, was awarded $8,270 by Larksfield Place for the project "Physical Activity Tracking and Examining Web site Usability with the Elderly."

James Locke, associate professor, aerospace engineering, was awarded $53,178 by the Department of Energy/Sandia National Laboratories for the "Adaptive Wind Blade Project."

Denise Maseman, chair and assistant professor, dental hygiene department, was awarded $6,000 by the United Methodist Health Ministry Fund for the "Dental Sealant Project."

Marcia Stevens, director, WSU Small Business Development Center, was awarded $139,300 by the Fort Hays State University/Small Business Administration for the project "WSU Small Business Development Center-2002."

Three faculty members in the School of Art and Design have each been given $500 Kansas Arts Commission mini-fellowship awards: Mary Sue Foster, professor; David Hiltner, assistant professor; and Mary Werner, instructor.

Awards

The Division of University Advancement and the Media Resources Center won 14 awards in the eight-state District 6 competition of the Council for the Advancement and Support of Education. The Office of University Publications and Advertising won two gold awards for graphic design and billboard advertising; three silver awards for graphic design, writing radio spots, and overall publications; and a bronze for radio advertising. The Alumni Association won a gold for special events and a silver for writing. The Office of University Communications won a gold award for media placements on a single topic for the Airline Quality Rating. The Foundation and Office of University Publications and Advertising won a silver award for the Foundation’s annual report and a bronze for graphic design of the report. The Foundation received two bronze awards for special events and for its newsletter Horizon. The Media Resources Center received a bronze award for video production.

Kevin Hager, assistant professor, Elliott School of Communication, won two awards in the International Broadcast Education Association Film, Video and Media Arts Festival. He won first place in the news category for a story on the Hoisington, Kan., tornado and second place in the educational/instructional category for the program "The Heart of Health." He worked on both projects for KWCH Channel 12.

Joe Kleinsasser, director of news and media relations, university communications, was named the National Federation of Officials Association Girls’ Basketball Official of the Year in Kansas. Each year NFOA picks two referees from each state and designates one for boys’ games and one for girls’ games.

Elections

Linda Bakken, professor, department of administration, counseling, educational and school psychology, and Willard Klunder, associate professor, history, have been elected as senators-at-large for the Faculty Senate. Their two-year terms begin June 1.

Emeriti status

The following faculty will be awarded emeritus status upon their upcoming retirement: Carol Furtwengler, Willis Furtwengler, and Orpha Duell, professors in the department of administration, counseling, educational and school psychology.

Dean Headley, associate professor of marketing, was quoted in a Jan. 2 Associated Press article that appeared in The Wichita Eagle, "U.S. might buy shares in airlines." Headley said when airlines were deregulated, the whole idea was to get government’s hand out of the airline business.

Jerry Shaw, instructor of ethnic studies, was quoted in a Jan. 4 Wichita Eagle article, "Popular Mid-America All-Indian Center security guard, war hero dies at 79." Shaw said kids loved Moses Jay and the way he could tell stories.

Rick LeCompte, H. Dene Heskett Chair of Finance, was quoted in a Jan. 4 Wichita Eagle article, "Shifting outlook." LeCompte said the market is going to be turbulent for awhile.

Anne Gallagher, research associate, Center for Economic Development and Business Research, was a source in a Jan. 6 Wichita Eagle article, "Wichita area ranks high in wages, cars and education." Gallagher said the data appears to support previous studies regarding salaries and housing costs.

Marcia Stevens, regional director, WSU Small Business Development Center, was quoted in a Jan. 9 Wichita Eagle article, "Dozens of firms to give advice at today’s small-business expo." She said the expo brings people in and gives them an overview of the business planning process.

Stan Longhofer, director of the Center for Real Estate, was quoted in a Jan. 10 Wichita Eagle article, "New housing coming to rundown block." Longhofer said numbers and statistics do not account for a neighborhood’s historical significance.

Janet Harrah, director, Center for Economic Development and Business Research, was quoted in a Dec. 12 London Financial Times article, "Aviation City – home to large and small." She provided insight about the aviation manufacturing sector and the other employment sectors in Wichita.

Harrah also was an expert in a Jan. 11 Wichita Eagle article, "Attacks dealt city ‘bad hand.’" She said it’s too soon to say what Wichita’s economy will do in 2003.

Ed Flentje, director, Center for Urban Studies, was quoted in a Jan. 11 Wichita Business Journal article, "Economic director job gives Bell a front-row seat for major events." Flentje said Bell brought the state of Kansas into the latter part of the 20th century in terms of capital finance.

Keith Lawing, public affairs associate, Center for Urban Studies, was quoted in a Jan. 11 Wichita Business Journal article, "REAP 2002 legislative action plan focuses on state budget shortfall." Lawing was quoted as an executive officer of the Regional Economic Area Partnership.

Prem Bajaj, associate professor emeritus of mathematics and statistics, was quoted in a Jan. 12 Wichita Eagle article, "Students to celebrate two Hindu holidays."

James Brewer, art studio technician, School of Art and Design, was cited in a Jan. 13 Wichita Eagle article, "Refurbished sculpture returns to Century II." Brewer was mentioned as having helped with the project.

Elizabeth Dunbar, curator, and David Butler, director, Ulrich Museum of Art, were quoted in a Jan. 13 Wichita Eagle article, "American history and art revisited." The article featured an upcoming exhibition at the Ulrich Museum.

Deborah Gordon, associate professor of women’s studies, wrote a commentary in the Jan. 14 Wichita Eagle, "Fixating on Yasser Arafat misses reality." Gordon said the Palestinian question concerns an entire people, not an aging leader.

Ken Ciboski, associate professor, political science, was cited in a Jan. 16 Wichita Eagle article, "Knight may quit visitor’s bureau." Ciboski said Knight should step down from his Wichita Convention and Visitors Bureau job if he runs for governor to demonstrate that he is serious about representing the whole state and not just Wichita.

Jim Snyder, professor of psychology, was featured in numerous Kansas newspaper articles in mid-December concerning the importance of holiday traditions. He was featured in the Kansas City Kansan, Gove Co. Advocate, Lebanon Times, Nemaha Co. Journal-Leader, Rush Co. News, Sabetha Herald and Wilson Co. Citizen.

Michael Rogers, assistant professor, exercise science, was featured in the Dec. 12 Scott Co. Record and Dec. 15 Independence News articles, "WSU researcher studies the effects of ginseng, creatine." Similar articles ran in the Caldwell Messenger and Barber Co. Index on Jan. 2.

David Koert, associate professor of mechanical engineering, was featured in a Dec. 21 Columbus Daily Advocate article, "Program turns students world upside down." The article was about a NASA program for students studying micro-gravity combustion.

Cindy Claycomb, associate professor of marketing, was an expert source in a Dec. 8 Iola Register article, "Bankruptcies up in Kansas, elsewhere." Claycomb said she didn’t think bankruptcies necessarily were a measure of how Kansas’ economy is doing because bankruptcies often are a personal issue of overspending.

Janet Harrah, director, Center for Economic Development and Business Research, was quoted in a Dec. 26 Derby Daily Reporter article, "Location key to Derby’s consistent growth." Harrah said Derby’s location and proximity to southeast Wichita and smaller towns attracts many shoppers.

Kenn Apel, professor and chair, communicative disorders and sciences, wrote a letter to the editor published in the Jan. 18 Wichita Eagle titled "Speech pathology." Apel applauded The Eagle for its excellent description of the field and speech-language pathologists’ responsibilities.

President Don Beggs was quoted in a Jan. 18 Wichita Eagle article, "Universities request $115 million bond." Beggs said WSU needs more space if it is to continue its role as a leader in aviation research. Accompanying the story was a photo of Michael Papadakis, professor, aerospace engineering, discussing WSU’s aviation research projects.

Dan Glickman, senior fellow in American politics and public policy, was featured in a Jan. 22 Wichita Eagle article, "Glickman shifts focus from politics." One year after ending a quarter-century working in the federal government, Glickman is lecturing, lawyering, accepting honors and cautioning Americans to eat better.

Keith Lawing, public affairs associate, Center for Urban Studies, was quoted in a Jan. 23 Wichita Eagle article "Unemployment for December hits 8-year high." Kansas and local unemployment likely will creep up for most of the year before it falls again, he said.

Bobbie Harris, project director and instructor, kinesiology and sport studies, was interviewed for Jan. 24-25 KWCH TV-12 stories on whether kids are getting enough physical education in school.

WSU men’s basketball coach Mark Turgeon, director of athletics Jim Schaus, and university police Capt. John Davis were quoted in a Jan. 25 Wichita Eagle article, "Tunnel vision." The article talked about some of Levitt Arena’s history.

Mike Kelly, curator of special collections, Ablah Library, was quoted in a Jan. 27 Wichita Eagle article, "Web site provides anyone a glimpse of Wichita history." The Web site is organized by the Wichita Public Library, Wichita-Sedgwick County Historical Museum and WSU’s special collections department.

Paul Cromwell, professor of criminal justice, was quoted in a Jan. 28 Wichita Eagle article, "City debates offender issues." Cromwell said offenders will return to the community no matter how much the public objects. The article featured the upcoming Wichita Assembly at WSU. A report by Cromwell, which provided research for the assembly, was featured in a related article, "Treatment assists offenders in adapting."

Andrew Kolb, assistant professor, School of Music, was featured in a Jan. 29 Wichita Eagle article, "Cellist to present diverse – yet related – recital."

Amy Strong, coordinator of the Jason Project at WSU, was quoted in a Jan. 30 Wichita Eagle article, "Jason and the middle-schoolers." Strong said if teachers fully integrate the Jason curriculum as it should be, the students can get an appreciation for science.

Shirley Beggs, wife of President Don Beggs, was quoted in a Jan. 30 Wichita Eagle article, "Mrs. Ahlberg was the ‘ideal president’s lady.’" Beggs talked of Mrs. Ahlberg’s sincerity. Former WSU health professions dean Cramer Reed called Mrs. Ahlberg a gracious lady.

Ken Ciboski, associate professor, political science, was quoted in the Feb. 1 Wichita Eagle article "Moran’s campaign war chest tops other House candidates’." Ciboski said high fund-raising numbers build political clout.

Nicolasa Kuster, assistant professor, School of Music, was pictured in the Feb. 1 Wichita Eagle. Kuster was to play in a recital Feb. 2 at WSU.

Janet Harrah, director, Center for Economic Development and Business Research, was quoted in a Feb. 2 Wichita Eagle article, "Survey shows state economy exhibiting life." Harrah said right after Sept. 11 there was a large drop in consumer confidence because of the uncertainty, but since that time the situation has stabilized as people have a clearer idea of what’s happening.

President Don Beggs and Jim Schaus, director of athletics, were quoted in a Feb. 3 Wichita Eagle article, "The drive to revive." Beggs said the Roundhouse is a reflection on the university. Schaus said once he started asking supporters about renovating Levitt Arena, answers came out like water from a fire hydrant.

A book written by Lowell Holmes, distinguished professor emeritus of anthropology, was featured in a Feb. 3 Wichita Eagle book review, "Paradise found."
