Jazz Festival moves main concert to WSU

This year’s Wichita Jazz Festival events include WSU musicians involved in a variety of off- and on-campus events April 14-20.

Events include judged college and high school jazz ensemble and combo performances, clinics by top jazz educators and concerts by international recording artists. The festival’s main event concert April 20 will be held in Miller Concert Hall this year.

Jazz Festival events include the following:

Sunday, April 14 – 1-4 p.m. "Tulip Festival and Jazz" at Wichita’s Botanica features WSU’s jazz ensembles, MidKansas Jazz Ensemble, and Tom Luer Quartet. Admission is $4.50; purchase tickets at Botanica, 807 N. Amidon.

Monday, April 15 – 7:30 p.m. Wichita Jazz Repertory Orchestra at Cabaret Old Town, 412 E. Douglas. $5 admission at the door.

Wednesday, April 17 – 7: 30 p.m. WSU’s Jazz Arts II and Colossal Jazz Sextet at Miller Concert Hall. Tickets are $4 with discounts; free to the WSU community. Call 978-3233 for tickets.

Thursday, April 18 – 7:30 p.m. WSU Jazz Arts I with guest artist saxophonist David Pietro and MidKansas Jazz Ensemble at Miller Concert Hall. Tickets are $4 with discounts; free to the WSU community. For tickets, call 978-3233.

Friday, April 19 – 9 a.m.-11 p.m., college big band performances, high school jazz ensembles, combo performances in various rooms inside Duerksen Fine Arts Center and Rhatigan Student Center. $10 general admission at the door.

Saturday, April 20 – 10 a.m.-2 p.m., free special interest clinics by festival artists/clinicians at Duerksen Fine Arts Center.

The main event concert at 7:30 p.m. April 20 will feature the University of North Texas "Zebras," Wichita Jazz Festival adjudicator All Stars with saxophonist David Pietro, pianist Dan Haerle, bassist/flutist Jill Allen and drummer, Taro Koyama.

There also will be a touring jazz band led by "Weather Report" bassist Victor Bailey that includes Bennie Maupin on woodwinds, Raford Griffin on drums, and Nick Smith on keyboard. Admission is $20; call 978-3233 for tickets.
