J. David McDonald, chair and associate professor, biological sciences, presented an invited scientific research seminar, "The PKU Mouse Project," April 2 at Genzyme Corp., a biotechnology company in Boston.

Hussein Hamdeh, professor of physics, co-authored the following published papers: "Mössbauer Spectroscopic and Structural Investigation of the Fe0.7-xTixAl0-3 Alloy System" in Physica B; "Study of Deactivation of Fe Based Fischer-Tropsch Synthesis Catalysts" in the proceedings of the 9th International Symposium on Catalyst Deactivation, "Mössbauer and Structural Studies of GdFe2-xTixAlloys" in Hyperfine Interaction, and "Potassium Promoted Catalyst Activation and Deactivation During Induction Period and Fischer-Tropsch Synthesis" in the proceedings of the 17th North American Catalyst Society.
Edwin Sawan, professor and interim chair, electrical and computer engineering, was co-author of a paper, "A Study on Singularly Perturbed Open-Loop Systems by Delta Operator Approach," published in the December issue of the journal of the Institute of Control, Automation and Systems Engineering. K.H. Shim, former graduate student, was co-author. Sawan and Shim also co-authored the paper "Near-Optimal State Feedback Design for Singularly Perturbed Systems by Unified Approach Using Delta Operators," which was published in the March issue of the International Journal of Systems Science.

Elaine Hanna, Mid-America Manufacturing Technology Center director, Center for Technology Application, was awarded $424,732 by MAMTC/National Institute of Standards and Technology for the project "MAMTC Wichita Regional Office-Year 12."
Awards
C. Nicholas Johnson, director of dance, was the top winner of the first annual juried short film competition at the Wichita Center for the Arts. His whimsical stop-action film involving mimes and a hand-shaped chair was called "I Sometimes Believe as Many as Six Impossible Things Before Breakfast."
In the news
Gerald Paske, professor emeritus of philosophy, was a source in a March 9 Wichita Eagle article on local responses to an "Interview With God." Paske says the Web site "Interview With God" has theological content directed toward those who already accept Christianity.
Janet Harrah, director, Center for Economic Development and Business Research, was a source in a March 10 Wichita Eagle article, "Thousands of aircraft workers lose jobs." Harrah said there probably wont be much recovery in Wichita until 2003.
Marie Allyn King, director of the opera and musical theater program, was a source for the March 10 Wichita Eagle article "Beam me up, Wolfgang." The article featured comments by King on WSUs upcoming performance of "The Magic Flute." King also was quoted in a similar article in the March issue of The Wichita Times.
Kevin Mullins, exhibition curator, Ulrich Museum, was cited in a March 10 Wichita Eagle "Arts at Large" column. Mullins will spend three months next fall as a visiting scholar at Nagoya City University in Japan.
Walt Myers, dean, College of Fine Arts, was featured in a March 10 Wichita Eagle "Celebrations" column by Bonnie Bing. The WSU Music Associates honored Walt Myers, who is retiring as dean of the College of Fine Arts.
Tad Boyle, assistant mens basketball coach, was featured in a March 10 Wichita Eagle career profile article. Boyle said in coaching, like in a lot of businesses, its very important to build as many relationships with people in the business as you can.
Delores Craig-Moreland, associate professor, criminal justice, was a source in a March 12 Wichita Eagle article, "Rapist may have seen 83-year-old woman as easy target, police say." Craig-Moreland said when criminals choose an elderly victim for a crime, theyre usually choosing someone frail and defenseless.
Mens basketball coach Mark Turgeon, womens basketball coach Darryl Smith and mens baseball coach Gene Stephenson were featured in a March 12 Wichita Eagle article "Staying Fit - How the coaches do it (or dont)."
Members of the Lieurance Woodwind Quintet were pictured in the March 12 Wichita Eagle. The picture and cutline promoted a concert by the WSU music faculty group. An article in the March issue of The Wichita Times also featured the quintet.
Jim McKenney, associate professor emeritus, political science, was interviewed by ABC Radio March 12 about the U.S. military involvement in Afghanistan.
