Ray Hull, professor, communicative disorders and sciences, authored the fourth edition of "Aural Rehabilitation: The Elements and Process of Serving Children and Adults with Hearing Impairment," which was published in November by Singular/Delmar Publishing Co.

Elaine Steinke, associate professor of nursing, had her article "Sexual Counseling Intervention After Myocardial Infarction" published in the December issue of the American Journal of Nursing.

 

Presentations

Several WSU housing and residence life staffers made presentations at the annual conference of the Upper Midwest Region-Association of College and University Housing Officers Nov. 1-3 in Des Moines, Iowa. Joseph Ecklund, assistant director of housing and residence life, and Heather Feld-Gore, Fairmount Towers Residence Hall director, did a presentation on housing’s "Transitions" program, a two-year-old effort to increase student involvement, satisfaction and retention at WSU. Feld-Gore and Mary Beth Mayes, Fairmount Towers community assistant, presented an interactive session, "Building the Connection: Supporting our Gay-Lesbian-Bisexual-and-Transgendered Residents." Angela Branson, Wheatshocker Apartments director, and Keilah Thompson, Fairmount Towers community assistant, presented "And the Theme THIS Year Is …," which dealt with developing and marketing an annual theme in housing and residence life. Branson and Kimberly Beary, Wheatshocker Apartments assistant director, presented "It’s the Thought That Counts," which offered more than 80 suggestions of inexpensive gifts that can be created to recognize staff.

Mary Lynn Burnett, Phyllis Jacobs and Mary Koehn, School of Nursing instructors, presented a poster, "The Nurse Entrance Test: Is it a Predictor of Program Success?" at the Kansas Nursing Exchange in Kansas City, Kan., Oct. 20. Jacobs and instructor Naomi Werne presented a poster, "Using Problem-Based Learning to Increase Critical Thinking," at a national conference on innovative nursing education in St. Louis, Mo., Oct. 26-29 and a poster, "Evaluating Problem-Based Learning in a Mental Health Nursing Course," at an international program on problem-based learning in undergraduate and professional education in Birmingham, Ala., Oct. 29-31.

Ray Hull, professor, communicative disorders and sciences, presented the paper "Hearing Loss As An Early Sympton of Wegener’s Granulomatosis" and the poster "Frequency Transposition with Adults with Impaired Hearing" at the annual convention of the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association Nov. 17-18 in Washington, D.C.

Elaine Steinke, associate professor of nursing, presented "Sexual Counseling Intervention After Myocardial Infarction" at the 4th Nursing Academic International Conference Oct. 1-4 in Washington, D.C., and at the 8th Kansas Nursing Research Exchange Oct. 20 in Kansas City, Kan.

 

Grants

Barbara Chaparro, director, Software Usability Research Lab, was awarded $800 by CTB/McGraw-Hill for the project "Consulting Agreement."

William Groutas, WSU Foundation Distinguished Professor of Chemistry, was awarded $160,578 by Supergen Inc. for the project "Research Program."

Bobbie Harris, project director and instructor, kinesiology and sport studies, was awarded $3,100 by the Kansas Health Foundation for the project "Healthy Communities Healthy Youth Event."

Alicia Huckstadt, associate professor and director of graduate curriculum, School of Nursing, was awarded $74,162 by the University of Missouri-Kansas City for the "Advanced Nurse Education Program-2001."

Mark McCain, general manager, KMUW FM 89, was awarded $135,165 by the Corporation for Public Broadcasting for the project "Radio Community Service Grant-2001."

Jeffrey Quirin, assistant professor, School of Accountancy, was awarded $9,981 by the University of Kansas/ University of Mississippi and the Office of Naval Research for the project "Occupational Stress and Turnover Issues Relating to Gender and Ethnicity: The Mediating Effects of Social Support, Locus of Control and Employment Expectations."

John Tomblin, associate professor, aerospace engineering, was awarded the following grants from NASA Langley/Advanced General Aviation Transport Experiments: $200,000 for "WBS 3.3.2 MIL HDBK-17 Database Generation;" $45,300 for "Task 11.2 AGATE Systems Assurance Work Package Support;" $95,000 for "Task 3.5 Engineering for Integrated Design and Manufacturing;" $50,000 for "Task 3.4.4 Crash Safety Design and Evaluation;" $82,000 for "Task 3.1 Low Cost Design and Manufacturing;" $36,000 for "Task 11.6.3 Special Certification Team;" and $71,000 for "11.1.2 AGATE Systems Assurance Work Package Support."

 

Awards

Marsha Gladhart, instructor/coordinator of educational computing, College of Education, will receive an award for innovative excellence in teaching, learning and technology at the 12th International Conference on College Teaching and Learning April 17-21 in Jacksonville, Fla. She is also WSU’s nominee for the Ernest L. Boyer International Award given at the conference.

 

Elections

Susan Ratz, director of housing and residence life, was elected vice president/president-elect for the eight-state Upper Midwest Region-Association of College and University Housing Officers. She is the first Kansan since 1985-86 to serve in this capacity.

 

Creative Activity

Harold Popp, professor of music, recently composed a work "Metagenthysis for Trombone Quintet" that will premiere at the 10th Biennial Festival of New Music at Florida State University Feb. 1-3. The piece was among more than 300 compositions submitted by 182 international composers; approximately 50 works were selected to be performed in nine concerts.
