Four finalists will be interviewed Jan. 30-Feb. 4 for the position vice president for academic affairs and research. The finalists, including one internal candidate, emerged from 43 nominations and applications. Two finalists will visit campus Sunday evening Jan. 30 through Tuesday, Feb. 1. The other finalists will visit Wednesday evening Feb. 2 through Friday, Feb. 4. WSU President Don Beggs plans to announce the new vice president by the end of February. Administration, faculty, staff and student groups will interview the finalists, and an open forum also will be held. The starting date may vary according to the candidate selected, but the candidate must start before the fall semester, according to Beggs. The four finalists and their positions in the last decade follow. Charles Carraher Jr. has been professor of chemistry and associate director of the Florida Center for Environmental Studies since 1995. For 10 years prior, he was chemistry professor and dean, College of Science, Florida Atlantic University. Carraher earned his doctorate in chemistry in 1967 from the University of Missouri, Kansas City. He earned his bachelor of science in chemistry from Sterling College (Kan.) in 1963. Since 1995, Pieter Frick has been dean of the College of Engineering, San Diego State University. From 1987-95 he was dean of the College of Engineering and Applied Science, University of Colorado at Colorado Springs. David Glenn-Lewin has been dean of WSUs Fairmount College of Liberal Arts and Sciences and professor of ecology since 1994. He held various positions at Iowa State University from 1978-94, including special assistant to the provost, interim dean, associate dean, department chair, and professor of botany. Glenn-Lewin earned a doctorate in ecology and evolutionary biology in 1972 from Cornell University, Ithaca, N.Y. He attended Illinois State University from 1965-1967 and received a bachelor of arts in 1965 from Knox College, Galesburg, Ill. Robert Kindrick has been at The University of Montana since 1991, serving as provost and vice president for academic affairs and since 1998 as university provost. From 1987-91, he had been provost and vice president for academic affairs, Eastern Illinois University, and was vice president for academic affairs at Emporia State University from 1984-87. Kindrick earned a doctorate in English (medieval literature) in 1971 from the University of Texas at Austin. He received a masters in English (Renaissance literature) from the University of Missouri at Kansas City and a bachelor of arts in 1964 in English and political science from Park College (Mo.). |
