How ‘suite’ it is

Cellist Andrew Kolb will perform primarily suites during a Faculty Artist Series recital at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 29, in Wiedemann Recital Hall.

Igor Stravinsky’s Suite Italienne will begin the program. This is a neoclassical work based on the composer’s ballet suite "Pulcinella." The program’s second piece is J.S. Bach’s Second Cello Suite, a very dark and sonorous work because of the minor key in which it is written, says Kolb.

During the second half of the program, guest cellist Cheung Chau, cello professor and orchestra director at Bethany College in Lindsborg, Kan., will join Kolb. They will perform Gian-Carlos Menotti’s lyrical Suite for Two Cellos and Piano. They also will perform the piece for the composer when he comes to WSU Feb. 5-8 as part of the Contemporary Music Festival, which is honoring him this year.

Last on the program will be the virtuosic Variations on a Theme of Rossini by the Slavic composer Martinu. It includes dazzling technical feats for both the cellist and pianist.

Pianists Tom Grubb and Sylvia Coats will perform with Kolb on this recital.

Call 978-3233 to reserve tickets. Prices start at $4 with discounts available. WSU faculty and staff may attend for free, but tickets are required.
