Black will play ‘Stuff’ during Octubafest

Phillip Black will perform a tuba recital as part of the Faculty Artist Series at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 17, in Wiedemann Recital Hall.

This will be Black’s 16th annual "Octubafest" recital since joining the faculty in fall 1986.

Black will perform Stuff – Theme with Seven Variations for Solo Tuba, a premiere performance of a work by composer James Grant, commissioned in 2001. "Stuff" is the first of four works Grant is composing that will be played by "Soltis Equinox," a new commissioning consortium for tubists of which Black is a member.

Black also will play Sonatina for Tuba or Bass Trombone by Halsey Stevens, Concert Piece for Tuba and Piano by Libby Larson, and Encounters II for Solo Tuba by William Kraft.

"Kraft’s work is the first of its type to explore extremes in range and dynamics and also makes great use of multiphonics – singing through the horn while playing other pitches," Black says.

"Convalescence Suite," written by Alec Wilder, is an 18-movement work that will be pared down to six movements, Black says. "So you’ll really be hearing ‘suite’ from ‘Convalescence Suite.’

"The final piece will be Concertino for Trombone by Ferdinand David, which is one of the great standard works for trombone, and I’m very happy it works for tuba so well," Black says.

Pianists Tate Addis and Bridget Hille will accompany Black.

As part of Octubafest, there will be a students’ recital at 1:30 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 18, in Wiedemann Recital Hall. Admission is free, no ticket required.

Call 978-3233 to reserve tickets. Prices start at $4 with discounts available. WSU faculty and staff may attend Faculty Artists Series concerts for free, but tickets are required.
