By
Julie Rausch
Olivier
Latry, titular organist of the Cathedral of Notre-Dame in Paris,
will play a concert as part of the Rie Bloomfield Organ Series at
7:30 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 23, in Wiedemann Recital Hall.
He
will perform a childrens concert at 10 a.m. Wednesday, Oct.
24, in Wiedemann Recital Hall.
His
study of piano began at age 7 and of organ at age 12. He attended
the Academy of Music at St. Maur-des-Fossés, studying organ
with Gaston Litaize, where until recently he taught organ, succeeding
his teacher. He now teaches at the Paris Conservatory.
Among
the concert highlights Latry will perform Toccata, Adagio and Fugue
in C. Major, BWV 564 by Bach and Théme et Variations by Jean
Langlais. The second half of the program will include an improvisation.
The
New York Times has described Latrys performance as "Brilliant
instrumentalist, splendidly clear, steady and buoyant. Mr. Latry
is clearly a superior organist."
Latry
earned numerous prizes during his conservatory years. From 1981-85
Latry was a titular organist of Meaux Cathedral. At age 23 he won
a competition to become one of three titular organists of the Cathedral
of Notre-Dame.
Latry
made his first American tour during the fall of 1986 and has since
made several tours to the United States and Canada. He also has
played throughout Europe, Russia, Japan, Australia and South America.
In
addition to concerts and teaching, Latry has recorded on the BNL
label in France and with SDV (distributed through BMG/RCA). Recordings
include the music of Bach, the complete organ works of Duruflé,
Viernes Symphonies 2 & 3, Widor Symphonies 5 and 6, Boëllmanns
Suite Gothique and works by Litaize.
At
the start of 2000, Latry performed three complete cycles (six recitals
each) of the organ music of Olivier Messiaen at Notre-Dame, at The
Church of St. Ignatius Loyola in New York City and at St. Pauls
Cathedral in London. These performances were followed by a recording
at Notre-Dame for Duetsche Grammophon of the complete organ works
of Messiaen.
