’Tis the holiday season at WSU

The holidays are usually celebrated with music, food, a holiday tree and the telling of the story of Christmas. At WSU, those same kinds of traditions exist.

An annual pilgramage

WSU’s Opera Theatre and Opera Kansas will present two performances of the popular Christmas opera, "Amahl and the Night Visitors," at 7:30 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 25, and 3 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 26. This is the 11th year for the performances of an opera about a poor crippled boy who is miraculously cured because of his generosity of spirit to the Christ child on a night when the three kings visit his home.

Call 978-3233 for tickets, which start at $8 with discounts available.

Turn on the lights

It’s time to admire the bright lights of the season during the annual WSU holiday tree lighting at 3:30 p.m. Friday, Nov. 30. The lighting is preceded with a 3 p.m. reception in the Rhatigan Student Center Fireplace Lounge.

In the spirit of giving, the Classified Senate is sponsoring a food drive. The Salvation Army’s Capt. John Augenstein will accept donations of nonperishable food items during the reception.

Feast for the holidays

Be transported to a 16th-century English castle during the 24th annual Madrigal Renaissance Feast Friday-Saturday, Nov. 30-Dec. 1.

Wassail will be served at 6 p.m. in the RSC’s second-floor Regents Room; a seven-course feast will follow in the Shocker Hall "castle" in the RSC ballroom.

Attendees will be regaled by trumpets, amazed by magic and entertained by members of the court. The School of Music’s Women’s Ensemble will be dressed as wine wenches, the Chamber Singers will play the manor servants and the Madrigal Singers will perform seasonal music.

Tickets are on sale through the Reservations Office, first-floor, RSC, from 8 a.m.-5 p.m. weekdays. Tickets are $27 with student and group discounts. Call 978-3475.

Some seasonal songs

The 39th annual Candlelight Concert will open with a selection that has become a holiday tradition, "Personent Hodie," a powerful song for brass, percussion and organ with all the choirs singing throughout Wiedemann Recital Hall.

The concert – presented at 4 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 2, and 7:30 p.m. Monday, Dec. 3 – features the WSU A Cappella Choir, Women’s Choir and Madrigal Singers. In addition, Robert Town, associate professor of organ, will play seasonal music on the Marcussen Organ.

Call 978-3233 for tickets. Prices start at $4 with discounts. Although WSU faculty and staff can attend for free, tickets are still required.

Eat, drink and be merry

Sample some non-alcoholic beverages in the Heskett Center lobby 2-4 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 5.

The Office of the President will host an all-university brunch 9-11 a.m. Tuesday, Dec. 11, in the RSC ballroom.

The Office of Human Resources will hold its holiday open house from 2-4 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 13, in the Human Resources Center. The Hugo Wall School of Urban and Public Affairs is holding its holiday open house from 4-6 p.m. Friday, Dec. 14, in 207 Lindquist Hall.
