A
musical treat
Program
highlights during the Fairmount String Quartets recital Feb.
10 include Brahms Quartet in Bb major, opus 67, which
is the last of Brahms quartets.
Brahms
may be the last great composer to combine elements of both classical
and romantic periods, says John Harrison, the quartets violinist.
"That
any compositions remain of Brahms at all is rather surprising,"
Harrison says. "Plagued with an overwhelming inferiority complex,
Brahms burned most of his works, including the bulk of his string
quartets, which he felt were unworthy of existence. He also destroyed
most of his history of himself, his writings, etc., considering
them embarrassing and condemning."
On
the positive side, his overpowering self-criticism pushed him to
rewrite and rewrite his music until it emerged perfect, Harrison
says.
Other
quartet members are violinist Nancy Luttrell, violist Catherine
Consiglio and cellist Andrew Kolb. All teach in the School of Music
and are principal players in the Wichita Symphony Orchestra.
The
quartets recital, at 7:30 p.m. in Wiedemann Recital Hall,
is part of the Faculty Artist Series.
