FAA
gives award
The
FAA has given WSUs National Institute for Aviation Research
its 2001 Excellence in Aviation institutional award.
An
evaluation panel and senior FAA officials unanimously selected NIAR
for the highly competitive, non-monetary award because of its continued
contributions to aviation research and education.
According
to the FAA, NIARs ability to partner with industry, academia
and government has made it a model for cooperative aviation research
in fields such as crashworthiness, composites and advanced materials,
structures, aerodynamics, aircraft icing, propulsion, flight control
and human factors.
Through
critical research activities, NIAR exposes undergraduate and graduate
students, many of whom are eventually employed in the local aviation
industries, to research experiences and techniques.
"The
award ... validates WSU as one of the nations leading aviation
research institutions," says Skip Loper, associate vice president
for research and interim executive director of NIAR.
