Making a connection

A new, more personalized orientation process called Shocker Connection will start this summer for new undergraduate students at WSU.

All new freshmen and transfer students with less than 24 hours are required to participate in orientation before registering for classes. Orientation previously was done in groups.

"Shocker Connection will do just as the name implies," says orientation coordinator Kim Volz. "Students will make connections on campus with faculty, staff and students to help them learn about Wichita State and all it has to offer."

One-on-one advising will be required for all the new students. The personalized attention will help students focus on their academic career and help make a connection with an adviser, which is an indicator of student retention, Volz says.

To help WSU employees understand the new orientation process, workshops are being offered. Workshops for clerical, non-administrative and non-faculty employees have already been held. The next series of workshops are designed for faculty, professional advisers and other administrative professionals, but anyone else interested may attend. The one-hour workshops will be held in 307/309 NIAR at 3 p.m. Feb. 14, 4 p.m. Feb. 18, and 12:30 p.m. Feb. 20.

To enroll, contact employee relations and training at 978-3068 or enroll at http://webs.wichita.edu/wsuert/trng-enroll-frm.htm.

For information about Shocker Connection or the workshop content, contact Dianne Coleman, 978-6977; Volz, 978-5427; or Wendy Hanes, 978-6002.
