The
Vagina Monologues helps violence prevention campaign
WSUs
departments of theater and womens studies and KMUW radio are
sponsoring a benefit performance of "The Vagina Monologues"
to help a campaign to stop violence against women and girls. This
production at 7:30 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 9, in Wilner Auditorium will
be one of 800 V-Day benefits worldwide during 2002.
Money
raised by WSUs participation in V-Day 2002 College Campaign
will benefit the Wichita Womens Crisis Center and 10 percent
of the proceeds will go to help women in Afghanistan. "The
Vagina Monologues" will be performed by current WSU students
and faculty, alumni and some community members.
V-Day
is a global movement that helps anti-violence organizations continue
and expand their core work while drawing public attention to the
many forms of violence against women and girls.
During
its first three years, the V-Day College Campaign has been presented
at more than 450 schools and raised more than $1 million for local
organizations and brought the message to stop violence against women
and girls to more than 40 million people worldwide.
Hailed
by The New York Times as "funny" and "poignant"
and by the Daily News as "intelligent" and "courageous,"
"The Vagina Monologues" dives into the mystery, humor,
pain, power, wisdom, outrage and excitement buried in womens
experiences. Based on interviews with a diverse group of hundreds
of women from a Long Island antiques dealer to a Bosnian
refugee the play by Eve Ensler brazenly explores questions
often pondered but seldom asked.
