Educator and author to discuss self-esteem, academic excellence

Black History Month events

WSU will hold other events to recognize and celebrate Black History Month:

• A panel discussion on stereotypes and media images, 6-7 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 15, in 129 Rhatigan Student Center

• Black Expo Gospel Concert, 6:30 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 17, in Miller Concert Hall. For tickets, call 978-3034.

• "Celebration of Black Art" lecture, noon Thursday, Feb. 22, Ulrich Museum

• Free sickle cell anemia testing, 8 a.m.-5 p.m. weekdays until Feb. 28 at Student Health Services, 209 Ahlberg Hall

Jawanza Kunjufu, renowned educator and president of African American Images, will present "The Cost of Racism: Living and Learning in a Multicultural Environment" at 7 p.m. Monday, Feb. 19, at the Hughes Metropolitan Complex.

Kunjufu’s energetic presentations inspire and motivate audiences regarding self-image and academic excellence.

During his career he has consulted for the U.S. Office of Education, National Head Start, and the National Association for the Education of Young Children. Kunjufu lectures across the country, conducting workshops on more than 30 topics addressing students, parents, teachers and community.

As an accomplished author, Kunjufu has many publications that are used in classrooms across the country. "How to Improve African American Youth Academic Achievement" is an analysis of the impact teacher expectations, parental support, student self-esteem, curriculum, methodology and peer pressure have on academic achievement. "SETCLAE (Self-Esteem Through Culture Leads to Academic Excellence)" is a curriculum model for educators and parents to use in teaching children their cultural heritage and increasing self-esteem and desire to excel. "Countering the Conspiracy to Destroy Black Boys" is an in-depth look at what is preventing boys from developing into men.

WSU’s Office of Student Development and Multicultural Affairs hosts the Feb. 19 lecture. Doors open at 6 p.m. For more information, contact Kevin Harvey at 978-3034.

Kunjufu will present two other lectures while in Wichita. At 6:30 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 18, Kunjufu will talk about "Restoring the Village, Values and Commitment: Solutions for the Black Family" at Tabernacle Baptist Church, 1817 N. Volutsia. The program is open to the public.

On Monday, Feb. 19, Kunjufu will address USD 259 educators at the Joyce Focht Instructional Support Center, 412 S. Main. He will present "Maximizing Black Male Student Achievement."
