Voice recital features ‘women in pants’

The College of Fine Art’s Faculty Artist Series will feature mezzo-soprano Deborah Baxter at 7:30 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 20, in Wiedemann Recital Hall.

Operatic arias and song repertoire, in which women play male characters that are called "women in pants" roles, will be featured. The program will include such well-known "young men" as Cherubino in "Le Nozze di Figaro," Octavian in "Der Rosenkavalier," Orpheus in "Orfeo" and the composer in "Ariadne auf Naxos."

Also featured will be art songs by Mozart, Brahms, Mahler, Wolf, Faure, Debussy, Paladilhe, Ives Quilter, Hundley and Vaughan Williams.

Colleague Thomas Grubb will accompany Baxter on piano. Sterling College instructor Arlene Jantz and Washburn University professor Ivalah Allen will join Baxter in the famous final trio from Strauss’ "Der Rosenkavalier."

Tickets start at $4, free to the WSU community. Call 978-3233 for reservations.
