U.S. education secretary’s state address can be seen at WSU

Secretary of Education Richard Riley’s seventh "State of American Education Address" can be viewed live via satellite from 11 a.m.-noon Tuesday, Feb. 22, in the Sudermann Commons at the Hughes Metropolitan Complex.

There will be a follow-up discussion after Riley’s talk. Leading the discussion will be Peter Zoller, interim vice president for academic affairs; David Glenn-Lewin, dean, Fairmount College of Liberal Arts and Sciences; Jon Engelhardt, dean, College of Education; and Mark Evans, associate superintendent for USD 259.

Secretary Riley will be speaking from Southern High School, recognized in North Carolina for making exemplary growth one year after being on the state’s list of low-performing schools. School leaders have worked to strengthen teacher development, reduce class sizes, make classrooms disciplined, provide rigorous courses and improve the learning environment.

In the past, Riley has used his annual address to announce major policy initiatives by the Department of Education.

A free box lunch will be served to those who make reservations to attend by 5 p.m. today (Feb. 17). Call Wanda Hughes, 978-3301.
