Pain, suffering are focus of conference

By Amy Geiszler-Jones

A physician who has written extensively about moral problems in medicine, the care of the dying and the nature of suffering will be the featured speaker during the 7th Annual Health Ethics Conference at the Rhatigan Student Center March 16-17.

The conference, "Responding to Pain and Suffering: A Neglected Ethical Imperative," is sponsored by WSU, Kansas Health Ethics, and the University of Kansas School of Medicine-Wichita. The conference will look at the ethical obligations of health care providers in managing pain and suffering of patients in their care and at the clinical, psychological and legal barriers to their responses.

Dr. Eric Cassell, a clinical professor of public health at Cornell University and attending physician of The New York Presbyterian Hospital, will give the keynote address, "Do We Live to Survive or Survive to Live?" 8:30-10 a.m. Friday, March 16. He will also present a special workshop for institutional review boards on "Protecting the Rights of Human Subjects in Research: Balancing Private Inurement and the Public Good" Saturday, March 17.

Cassell is the author of several books, including "The Nature of Suffering" and the two-volume "Talking with Patients." He served on the National Bioethics Advisory Commission during President Clinton’s administration.

Sessions during the conference will include presentations such as "Kill the Pain and not the Patient," "Ouch! That hurts! Pediatric Pain Management," and "Dealing with Depression: Pain’s Persistent Shadow."

The conference concludes with a panel discussion on "Spiritual Aspects of Suffering."
