18, No. 12 March 1, 2001 Issue Recital honors Stations of the Cross In a multimedia presentation, music, slides and poetry will honor the Stations of the Cross during a Rie Bloomfield Organ Series concert at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, March 13, in Wiedemann Recital Hall. Distinguished concert organist Marilyn Mason will play "Le Chemin de la Croix" by Marcel Dupré (1886-1971). Duprés score was inspired by a series of poems by the same name by Paul Claudel (1868-1955). "Le Chemin de la Croix" is translated "The Way of the Cross" or "The Stations of the Cross." The Stations of the Cross are a series of pictures representing Jesus final sufferings and death. Slides of the stations will be shown. Joyce Cavarozzi, associate professor of theater, and Richard Welsbacher, professor emeritus of theater, will alternate readings of Claudels poems. Mason is organist, professor of music and chairman of the organ department of the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor. Robert Town, WSUs professor of organ, studied with Mason as a doctoral teaching fellow from 1963-65 at UM. Mason has performed on every continent except Antarctica. She was the first American woman to play in Westminster Abbey, in Latin America and in Egypt. Mason has commissioned nearly 75 works by several influential composers. Call 978-3233 for reserved tickets. Prices start at $7 with discounts available. Compiled by Julie Rausch |
