18, No. 12 March 1, 2001 Issue Take a trip to see A T. rex Named Sue By Amy Geiszler-Jones WSUs Division of Continuing Education is sponsoring a field trip Saturday, March 24, to see a replica of the worlds most famous dinosaur at the Sternberg Museum of Natural History at Fort Hays State University. Two replicas of Sue the largest, most complete and best preserved Tyrannosaurus rex fossil ever discovered are making stops across the continental United States and Hawaii as part of the exhibition "A T. rex Named Sue." The Sternberg is the smallest venue and the closest one to Wichita to host the exhibit. The cost of the WSU-sponsored bus trip is $49 per person, which includes lunch and admission fees to the museum and exhibit. The bus will leave at 8 a.m. from the Hughes Metropolitan Complex, 5015 E. 29th St. N. After a lunch buffet at a local restaurant, tour-goers will start a one-hour guided tour at 12:30 p.m. and have an hour following that to explore the museums other exhibits, including the unique fish-within-a-fish fossil. The bus will leave Hays at 2:30 p.m. and arrive in Wichita at 6 p.m. "A T. rex Named Sue" features the 42-foot-long, life-size cast of the 67-million-year-old fossil excavated from South Dakota in 1990. The fossil is named for Sue Hendrickson, the field paleontologist who found the fossil. The original fossil was purchased for $8.3 million by the Field Museum in Chicago, where it went on display in May 2000. The traveling exhibition includes interactive anatomical modules and other interactive stations. The deadline to sign up for the WSU bus trip is Monday, March 19.
