18, No. 12 March 1, 2001 Issue Gift gives morepower to program By Joe Kleinsasser A $40,000 gift from Western Resources will help WSU develop online credit and continuing education courses in electric power engineering by this fall. A portion of the funds will go toward the equipment necessary to support the classes, according to Ward Jewell, director of the power quality lab at WSU and professor of electrical engineering. The continuing education courses will target engineers, consultants and other professionals, including technicians, line crews and managers. The courses also will benefit professional engineers who need continuing education hours, Jewell said. "The power quality lab will enable electrical engineers and consultants throughout the state to share practical applications and pursue innovative ideas online," said David Wittig, chairman of the board, president and chief executive officer of Western Resources Inc. "From a company perspective, well be able to seek the expertise of those individuals affiliated with the power quality lab when we encounter unusual situations beyond the scope of our expertise." The credit courses will target WSU engineering students. The program in electric power engineering prepares electrical engineers for jobs in electric power and related fields. Program graduates are employed by electric power utilities, consultants to the electric utility industry, and by manufacturers of equipment, including electric motors, motor drives, power supplies, transformers and other equipment. |
