MRC wins national award

By Julie Rausch

The Media Resources Center recently won two national Telly Awards for an advertising spot and a video documentary. The MRC won a bronze finalist award for "Beyond the Word," a documentary by Greg Matthias, manager of television services, who accompanied students and faculty from WSU’s dance department to Poland last summer when they participated in a mime festival. The documentary aired on WSU TV several times in September.

The MRC also won the top award – the silver – for a 30-second "Thinker, Doers, Movers and Shockers" advertising spot shot by videographer Lonny Quattlebaum and graphic designer Dominik D’Angelo, who came up with the concept and storyboard. The spot aired last fall on WSU TV for a few months and also on two televised WSU men’s basketball games here and in two other markets.

The prestigious national awards, founded in 1980, showcase and recognize outstanding non-network and cable TV commercials and programming, as well as film and video productions. Past TV commercial winners have included 7UP, Adidas, American Heart Association and Chevrolet. Video and film program winners have included Dick Clark Productions, Touchstone Pictures, DreamWorks SKG and Miramax Films.

Quattlebaum, who also helped MRC video producer and editor Steve Worley with editing, shot the first part of "Beyond the Word" at WSU. Chris Garner,a graphic artist, produced graphic elements for the video.

While in Poland, Matthias got the students’ views about going to and performing in a foreign country for the first time. He also explored what mime is with C. Nicholas Johnson, a mime and director of dance at WSU.

Worley, who worked on editing both award-winning pieces, has won two Tellys in the past for the MRC.

Telly entries don’t compete against each other. They compete against a high standard of excellence. In 2000, there were 11,033 entries, and 14-18 percent of those are bronze finalists while 7-10 percent are silver winners, which is the top award.
