Learn about teaching online, apply for grants

The Center for Teaching and Research Excellence will co-sponsor a free workshop, "EXCITED about Online Teaching," 1:30-4:30 p.m. Friday, Sept. 29, in 128 Jabara Hall.

The workshop will begin with a keynote address, "Social Presence: Teaching and Learning with Invisible Others," by Tracy Callaway Russo, assistant professor of communications studies at the University of Kansas.

Breakout sessions will include various aspects of teaching online, from the first steps of Web-enhancing your course to developing total online courses.

At the workshop, faculty can sign up to learn how to use a new tool, Blackboard, to support courses online.

Enrollment is limited. For information or to register, call 978-3209.

Funding deadlines approaching

Deadlines for two federal research funding award programs are coming up, according to Kansas National Science Foundation EPSCoR officials.

A faculty member who has never been a principal investigator on a federal agency research grant can receive up to $50,000 under the First Awards program. The deadline for submissions is Oct. 16.

Activities leading to the development of a multidisciplinary or multi-investigator project or a proposal in response to a major NSF initiative are eligible for the Planning Awards program, which gives up to $10,000. The deadline is Jan. 1.
