Deltha Colvin,
assistant vice president, student affairs, was awarded $190,000
by the U.S. Department of Education for the project "Disability
Services Student Support Services-2002."
Deema deSilva, director, Student Support
Services, was awarded $321,673 by the U.S. Department of Education
for the project "Student Support Services-2002."
Don Nance, director, Counseling and
Testing Center, was awarded $450,365 by Social and Rehabilitation
Services for the project "Training and Resource Support for
Mental Health Providers of Treatment for Medicaid-Eligible Children
with Severe Emotional Disturbance and Their Families-2002."
Michael Papadakis, professor, aerospace
engineering, was awarded $20,000 by NASA/Glenn for the project "Water
Droplet Impingement Program-Phase II."
Publications
Gary Toops, professor of Russian,
wrote an article, "Iterativity and Contemporary Aspect Selection
in Upper Sorbian," published in the July issue of the Slavonic
and East European Review. His reviews of "The Prominence of
Tense, Aspect and Mood" and "Language Encounters Across
Time and Space: Studies in Language Contact" appeared in the
journal Language.
Transitions
Wendy Hanes, former director of the
College of Fine Arts Institute, and Elaine Bernstorf, associate
professor, are serving as interim associate deans in the College
of Fine Arts. Judith Fear, adjunct piano instructor, is the
interim director for the institute. Former associate dean Nicholas
Smith has returned to teaching French horn full time.
Honors
WSUs Jazz Arts I, directed by
Tom Fowler, has been invited to perform at the 33rd Annual
Midwest United States-Japan Association Conference to be held in
Wichita Sept. 9-11. The annual event is the premier business networking
opportunity between the Midwest and Japan.
In the news
Bobbie Harris, project director of
Physical Dimensions and Focus, was quoted in a July 8 Wichita Eagle
article "Kansas kids speak on what they want." Harris
talked about a study that asked children what they think.
Dorothy Miller, director of the Center
for Womens Studies, and Mike Madecky, student activities
director, were quoted in a July 9 Wichita Eagle article "Kansas
sees first same-sex household tally." Miller said people are
feeling a bit more comfortable marking their preferences on census
forms. Madecky said gays and lesbians still face discrimination,
but knowing one is not alone helps.
Carol Wolfe Konek, professor, womens
studies, was quoted in a July 13 Wichita Eagle article "Years
dont quell abortion debate." Konek said she planned to
join other abortion-rights activists in keeping the clinics open
and shielding patients from protestors.
The Fairmount String Quartet was featured
in a July 13 Wichita Eagle article "Camp members to give chamber
concert." Members of the Fairmount String Quartet and two other
faculty members led a camp on chamber music.
