Geraldine Hammond had her day March 16
Wichita Mayor Bob Knight proclaimed Tuesday, March 16, Geraldine Hammond Day in honor of the retired English professor’s 90th birthday, which was March 14.

Hammond, professor emeritus, holds a number of firsts in her long career as a student and faculty member at WSU. As a student at the University of Wichita beginning in 1927, Hammond edited the yearbook Parnassus, became the first woman cheerleader and graduated first in her class in 1931. She started her teaching career at the University of Wichita in 1932 and was the first recipient of the university’s Excellence in Teaching Award. She retired in 1978, and now splits her time between residences in Wichita and Colorado.

Don’t be alarmed
The environmental health and safety department will conduct their annual test of building sprinkler systems during normal office hours March 22-25.  The fire alarms in 20 campus buildings equipped with sprinklers will go off briefly during the testing.

Change the date
The general faculty meeting originally scheduled for March 12 has been rescheduled to 3:30 p.m. Tuesday, March 30, in 208 Hubbard Hall. The meeting agenda includes two proposals from the general education committee: the development of guidelines for further studies courses and a change to the committee’s charge.

There’s no debate
For the first time since 1977, and only the seventh time ever, WSU is sending debate students to the 53rd National Debate Tournament March 26-29 at Wayne State University. Jeremy Hathaway, Kristi Morioka, Shannon Holland and Tom O’Toole comprise WSU’s two teams under the direction of Elliott School of Communication assistant professor Jeff Jarman. WSU won the tournament in 1968.

That’s the spirit
