Presentations
James Ho, Trustees Distinguished Professor of Physics and Chemistry, gave an invited talk on "Low Temperature Specific Heat in Materials Research" at the national meeting of the Minerals, Metals & Materials Society in Chicago Oct. 11-15.

Grants
Ramesh Agarwal, Bloomfield Distinguished Professor of Aerospace Engineering and National Institute for Aviation Research executive director, received $40,000 from NASA/University of Kansas for the project "Kansas Space Grant Consortium."

David Ellis, director of research and development, National Institute for Aviation Research, received $26,100 from NASA/Langley for the project "AGATE: Task 11.1 (98) Program Safety."

Steven Hooper, associate professor, aerospace engineering, received $2,022 from the Lockheed Martin Corp. for the project
"C-130J Head Strike Analysis."

Gregory Meissen, psychology professor and Self-Help Network of Kansas executive director, received $234,430 from the Department of Social and Rehabilitation Services for the project "Project Access - 1999."

Larry Ramos, McNair Scholars program director, received $201,552 from the Department of Education for the project "Ronald E. McNair Postbaccalaureate Achievement Program - 1999."

John Tomblin, assistant professor, aerospace engineering, received $26,667 from NASA EPSCoR/Center for Research Inc. for the project "Studies of the Role of Surface Treatment and Sizing of Carbon Fiber Surfaces on the Mechanical Properties of Composites Containing Carbon Fibers - 1998."

Awards
Val Peck
, secretary, College of Fine Arts dean's office, has received the Gale C. Hankins Distinguished Service Award from the Missouri-Iowa-Nebraska-Kansas region of the National Association of Education Buyers. Peck, a former administrative assistant in purchasing, was instrumental in getting the MINK Webpage online and has been the editor of the region's newsletter.

 

University task force to further study parking plan

A university task force, with representatives from each of WSU's three employee senates and student government, will be formed to further study the parking plan proposed in July by university officials, according to President Hughes. WSU will still, however, move ahead with plans to get an OK from the Board of Regents in November to seek the Legislature's approval to sell bonds to finance the plan from the Legislature.

Volunteers still needed for scholarship competition
Faculty and staff volunteers are still needed as observers during WSU’s premier scholarship competition, the Distinguished Scholarship Invitational. About 250 top high school students from around Kansas and the United States will participate in the competition.
