Presentations
James McKenney, associate professor, political science, presented a paper, “Preparing for 1999: The Transfer of the Panama Canal,” at the International Studies Association South Conference in Charlotte, N.C., Oct. 30. He also participated in a panel focusing on “Key States and Regional Instability.” His presentation dealt with the ongoing civil war in Colombia, South America.

 

Promotions
Elaine Hanna has been promoted to associate regional director of the Wichita Mid-America Manufacturing Technology Center located at WSU.

 

Grants
Andra Katz, assistant professor of criminal justice, Hugo Wall School of Urban and Public Affairs and director, Regional Community Policing Training Institute, received $749,890 from the U.S. Department of Justice for the project “Regional Community Policing Institutes - Year 2.”

L. Scott Miller, associate professor, aerospace engineering, received $20,000 from the Kansas Electric Utilities Research Program for the project “Matfield Green Wind Kiosk.”

T.S. Ravigururajan, associate professor, mechanical engineering, received $7,500 from the American Society of Heating, Refrigerating and Air Conditioning Engineers Inc. for the project “Graduate Grant-In-Aid.”

Elia Salas, academic adviser, Fairmount College of Liberal Arts and Sciences, received $7,948 from the University of Kansas Medical Center for the project “Health Careers Pathways Program: Satellite Center - Wichita - 1999.”

Senate refuses to adopt university’s dismissal for clause policy

The Faculty Senate refused to make changes to a policy dealing with the process of firing tenured faculty in the faculty handbook during its meeting Nov. 9. Over the objections of the faculty, President Hughes modified the university’s dismissal for cause policy, effective Nov. 1, saying the changes were needed to be in compliance with state law. The senate was asked to include the amended policy in the faculty handbook.

Help needed to continue service for the visually impaired

A service that provides daily broadcasts of printed materials to more than 2,000 blind and visually impaired people in the greater Wichita area is moving to a new home. The move by the Wichita Radio Reading Service from its present location at WSU to the university’s Metropolitan Complex is necessary and welcome, but it comes with a price tag and financial help is needed to complete the move.

A shot in the arm

Muhammad Usmani, library systems manager, gets a flu shot from Judy Gariepy, nurse practitioner, at Student Health Services. The clinic has given about 550 vaccines of its 750-dose supply. No appointment is necessary for the shot; cost is $5. Student Health Services is also offering special services Nov. 18 and 20 as part of Men’s Health Awareness Month. Appointments are required for the men’s health screening; cost is $17 for faculty and staff. Clinic hours are 8 a.m.-5:30 p.m. Mondays and Tuesdays, and 8 a.m.-4:30 p.m. Wednesdays-Fridays.
