Memorial planned
A memorial service for Fred Benson, a longtime criminal justice faculty member who retired last fall due to health reasons, will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 26, at University United Methodist Church, 2220 N. Yale. An award-winning teacher, Judge Benson taught thousands of students during his 22-year career at WSU, including Wichita Police Chief Mike Watson, Sedgwick County Sheriff Mike Hill and local attorney and former Wichita mayor Frank Ojile. He was Park City’s first municipal judge, and his gavel was also heard for more than 15 years in courtrooms in Bel Aire, Cheney and Maize. Before coming to Wichita in 1976, he was the deputy district attorney in Los Angeles. Judge Benson, 69, died Jan. 20 and is survived by his sisters Ruby Price, Pris Dozier, Donna Raine and Mary Conaway, all of Indianapolis. Memorials have been established with Hospice Inc. and University United Methodist Church.

That’s a lot of pennies
If you’re in need of 1-cent stamps to accompany your old 32-cent stamps, WSU’s Postal Services has less than 2,000 currently available. After the new 33-cent postage rate for first class letters took effect Jan. 10, the 1-cent stamps, which feature a rooster on a blue background, were a hot-selling item. Ninety minutes after opening their windows Monday, Jan. 11, Postal Services had gone through their 10,000-stamp supply. Since then, they’ve sold 20,000 of the penny stamps.

Carolyn Benefiel, registration assistant, right, processes Evelyn Phinney’s enrollment form during senior citizen registration. Phinney was among 297 seniors who signed up Jan. 21 to take WSU classes for free. The seniors were treated to refreshments provided by the registrar’s office while they registered. Phinney, who has been taking classes for 10 years at WSU, signed up for Spanish conversation and fiction writing. Seniors who are 60 years and older may audit WSU classes for free, if space is available and the class has no prerequisite.
