Kansas Lt. Gov. Gary Sherrer, who also is the state’s secretary of commerce and housing, speaks to a group of Wichita business leaders and the WSU community during a special forum Feb. 3 hosted by WSU’s Center for Economic Development and Business Research.

Looking on is Ed Miller, vice president, corporate services with Willis Corroon Corp. of Kansas. Miller is co-chair of the CEDBR’s Wichita Area Outlook Team, comprising 31 business and community leaders who meet quarterly to gauge the area’s economic health. Sherrer told the group that Kansas is looking to attract six industries: administrative centers; value-added companies, such as cheese processors near dairy operations already in Kansas; aircraft parts and avionics; call service centers; plastic companies; and wholesale distribution companies. He also noted tourism inquires are up more than 10 percent from a year ago.

Have some ‘Soup with Substance’
Listen to a talk about heart attack prevention and enjoy free soup and beverages at the next “Soup with Substance” presentation at the Heskett Center lobby at 11:45 a.m. Wednesday, Feb. 10. The special guest speaker will be Geri Dreifort of Health Strategies.

One university’s ‘junk’ could be your ‘treasure’
The Physical Plant is having a surplus sale now through Friday, Feb. 12. Among the items up for bid are computers, electronics, equipment, desks, tables, printers, copiers, plotters, projectors, fireplace tools, room partitions, fireproof file cabinets, a safe, a stove and even a doghouse. The lots are listed on the Physical Plant Website, www.pp.twsu.edu, and they can be viewed at the Physical Plant warehouse from 8 a.m.-4 p.m. weekdays. Get ready for commencement
The University Bookstore, in conjunction with Jostens, will host a faculty regalia fair 8 a.m.-7 p.m. Feb. 10-11 and 8 a.m.-5 p.m. Feb. 12. A variety of styles, fabrics and colors are available in different price ranges. Full payment is required at the time to place an order. Regalia may also be rented for the May commencement ceremony. All orders should be placed before March 15 in order to guarantee hood colors. Rental orders must be paid for at the time they are picked up. Be a sweetie, take a kid to a WSU game Valentine’s Day
The WSU women’s basketball game with Illinois State at 2 p.m. Feb. 14 in Levitt Arena will be part of the “Take a Kid to the Game” program, sponsored by Regal by Buick. The program promoted the women’s game to America’s youth. All kids will be admitted free to the game and can participate in several events leading up to the game. Among the activities are a one-hour workshop with Coach Darryl Smith and the team at 11 a.m. and a Kids Career Fair, hosted by many local women business leaders, on the concourse. A free on-court autograph session follows the game.

Record $33 million given in financial aid

Southwestern Bell named exclusive telecommunications sponsor of Shocker baseball
The Wichita State University Shockers baseball program and Southwestern Bell announced a 10-year, $225,000 sponsorship agreement Feb. 4. The partnership names Southwestern Bell as the exclusive telecommunications sponsor of WSU Shocker baseball, creating a wide range of marketing, signage and advertising opportunities for the state’s largest and oldest provider of telecommunications services. It also is the first major corporate sponsorship of its kind for WSU, whose successful baseball program has emerged as one of the finest in the country.
