Trombonist remembers father at concert

The College of Fine Art’s Faculty Artist Series will feature Russ Widener, associate professor of trombone, in concert at 7:30 p.m. Nov. 1 in Wiedemann Recital Hall.

The recital will be dedicated to Jack Widener, Russ’ father, who died in August at age 81. "In Memoriam," written by Raymond Premru in 1967 and composed for a trombone quartet, will be played by a trombone choir of Widener’s students. American-born Premru was one of the world’s most respected bass trombonists.

Another recital selection, "Arrows of Time," is one of the trombone community’s favorites because of its lyric melodies and jazz-like rhythms.

Widener also will perform a piece initially composed by Eric Ewazen for WSU alumnus Michael Powell, a member of the American Brass Quintet for many years and a New York City freelance musician. Although Ewazen is a pianist, his compositions for brass have quickly joined the popular repertoire for quintets around the world.

Pianist Sherry Freund will accompany Widener during the recital.

Tickets start at $4 with discounts available. The recital is free to the WSU community. Call ext. 3233 for more information.
