The College of Education is working with the U.S. Department of Education to host four free community forums. This is the first time the education college is participating in the satellite town meeting series.

Following a national teleconference presentation, a panel of local educators and education leaders will have interactive discussions with the audience.

The first presentation in the WSU Community Forum on Education series is "Transforming Schools and Communities: The Power of Technology" at 6:45-8:30 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 19, in the Sudermann Commons, Hughes Metropolitan Complex.

Panelists will be Howard Pitler, principal at Brooks Middle Magnet School in Wichita; Dave Brown, instructional coordinator for technology in the Derby Public Schools; and Marsha Gladhart, WSU’s College of Education, coordinator of educational computing.

Other series topics will be "Creating Community: Engaging Students in Civic and Character Education" Nov. 16; "Powerful Middle Schools: Influencing Teaching and Learning for Young Adolescents" Feb. 15; and "Multiplying Excellence: Ensuring Quality Mathematics and Science Teaching" April 18.

Panelists for the Nov. 16 forum will be Mary Douglas Brown, member of the state Board of Education; Stephanie Hollimon, principal, Ingalls Edison Academy in Wichita; John Wilson, professor emeritus of curriculum and instruction; and Carolyn Bridges, principal, Pleasant Valley Elementary in Wichita.
