WSU public radio station aims for $130,000

By Joe Kleinsasser

KMUW 89.1 FM, the public radio station at Wichita State University, will ask listeners to participate in the station’s annual on-air fall pledge drive Oct. 15-23.

Station general manager Mark McCain says the $130,000 goal is needed to help the station maintain its current programming from National Public Radio and cover production costs.

"Only about 10 percent of the audience financially support the programs they enjoy and find important.

"Since KMUW is non-commercial, our on-air fund-raisers are a critical time during which we generate the revenue to sustain the diverse programming," said McCain.

KMUW operates on a blend of funding from federal, state, business, public and private sources. Last year almost 50 percent of KMUW’s operation budget came from individual listener contributions and local business underwriting.

Pat Hayes, KMUW development director, said the station still needs volunteers to help answer telephones during the fund drive.

Hayes also encourages donors to consider offering a challenge or matching grants during the fall drive.

If you can help answer telephones or provide a challenge or matching grant during the fund drive, call KMUW, ext. 6789.

Contributions may be payroll deducted.
