Mainstage Theatre open with ‘Rose Tatoo’

WSU’s Mainstage Theatre will start the season with Tennessee Williams’ "The Rose Tattoo" Oct. 7-10 in Wilner Auditorium.

This warm-hearted comedy, winner of the 1951 Tony Award for best play, is about the fiery Serafina Delle Rose, a grieving Italian widow living on the Gulf Coast who meets a lusty truck driver and falls in love.

It is a comedy of character that Williams called "my love play to the world." Nominated for eight Academy Awards including best picture, the film version won three Oscars.

One of the special features of this production is the set designed by WSU student Greg Crane. Crane sought to create a set with a fun, romantic flair for the late ’40s set. The opening setting of the kitchen and parlor is decorated in the colors and patterns of a typical Sicilian family. The foliage, trees and flowers suggest the semi-tropical environment of the Louisiana Gulf Coast and add color and depth to the outside of the house.

Other performances during WSU’s 75th theater season will be "Cabaret" Dec. 2-5, "Ghosts" Feb. 24-27, "The Desert Song" March 9-12, and "Richard III" May 4-6.

All Mainstage Theatre performances begin at 7:30 p.m. Thursdays-Saturdays and at 2 p.m. Sundays. Individual event prices are $10 with discounts for the WSU community, students, senior citizens and military members. Series subscription prices start at $34 with discounts available. For tickets call ext. 3233.
