Publications

Anthony Gythiel, professor of history, has had his book, "The Mystery of the Trinity: Trinitarian Experience and Vision in the Biblical and Patristic Tradition," published by St. Vladimir’s Seminary Press, Crestwood, N.Y. The book is a translation of Boris Bobrinskoy’s work "La Trinité."

Keith Pickus, assistant professor of modern German history, has had his book, "Constructing Modern Identities: Jewish University Students in Germany, 1815-1914," published by Wayne State University Press. The book was awarded the Koret Foundation’s Publication Prize for Jewish Studies.

Wan Yang, assistant professor, geology, published a paper, "Stratigraphic Architecture and Dynamic Evolution of Barrier-Bar-Lagoon, Depositional Systems, Eocene Jackson Group, Duval Country, South Texas," in the Gulf Coast Association of Geological Societies Transactions in September. He gave a presentation, "Internal Geometry of Barrier-Bar-Lagoon Systems, Eocene Jackson Group, Duval County, South Texas" at the association’s 49th annual convention in Lafayette, La., Sept. 15-17. 


New to WSU

Anita Kirkpatrick has joined the Office of Human Resources as assistant director for employee relations and training.


Transitions

Angela Jones, a former cooperative education program coordinator, is the director of marketing and public relations with the Center for Entrepreneurship.


Grants

Elizabeth Behrman, associate professor, physics, was awarded $199,177 by the National Science Foundation for the project "Feasibility of a Quantum Dot Neural Network."

Francis D’Souza, associate professor, chemistry, was awarded $34,068 by the NSF for the project "Fluorescence and Emission Lifetime Methods for Laboratory Instruction."

David Koert, assistant professor, mechanical engineering, was awarded $9,740 by NASA Glenn Research Center for the project "Student Intern Program in Microgravity Combustion."

Peter Kuchment, professor, mathematics and statistics, was awarded $10,000 by the NSF/Louisiana State University for the project "Midwest Geometry Conferences, 1998-2000."

Michael Lydy, associate professor, biological sciences, was awarded $67,412 by the Kansas Department of Health and Environment for the project "Demonstration of the Best Management Practices for Recreational Areas, Wichita, Kan."

Louis Medvene, associate professor, psychology, was awarded $3,500 by Via Christi Health System for the project "CARING: From Generation to Generation."

Peer Moore-Jansen, associate professor, anthropology, was awarded $3,600 by the Department of Interior/Bureau of Reclamation for the project "Osteological Assessment of Human Remains Recovered from Multiple Sites in Kansas and Nebraska."

Michael Papadakis, associate professor, aerospace engineering, was awarded $36,882 by NASA/Lewis for the project "Modernize and Expand the Water Impingement Database for Aircraft Surfaces."

Ken Pitetti, professor, public health sciences, was awarded $22,430 by the Kansas Department of Health and Environment for the project "Children and Youth with Disabilities Study."

Carol Westby, professor, and Deborah Froelich, doctoral student, communicative disorders and sciences, were awarded $14,960 from the Department of Health and Human Services/ Administration on Children, Youth and Families for "Project FRAMES (Family Relationships of Asian-American Minorities and the Educational System)-2000."


Awards

The Office of University Communications received nine awards from the Kansas chapter of Public Relations Society of America. Receiving awards of excellence were the annual report "Sculpting the Future: The Metropolitan Advantage Realized" and the 1998-99 Connoisseur Series mailer and Fairmount Society dinner invitation for internally produced print materials. Receiving awards of merit were the Airline Quality Rating research project and publicity in the public affairs division, the WSU Web site, the graduate music program poster and reply card for internally produced print materials, a news release about WSU acquiring a lunar meteorite for news/feature writing, and the Barton School of Business newsletter and Inside WSU in the newsletters category.
