Holiday tradition continue

By Amy Geiszler-Jones and Julie Rausch

The end of November and the beginning of December will mean the return of some holiday favorite events and a prominent alumna.

  • WSU's Opera Theatre and Opera Kansas will present performances of the popular Christmas opera "Amahl and the Night Visitors" at 7:30 p.m. Nov. 27 and 3 p.m. Nov. 28 in Miller Concert Hall. This is the ninth year this Gian Carlo Menotti opera has been staged at WSU. Deborah Baxter, assistant professor of voice, will direct this tale of three kings stopping to rest at the cottage of a poor, crippled shepherd boy and his widowed mother. Baxter played the mother in the 1997 production at WSU. Vernon Yenne, associate professor, is the conductor. Tickets are $8 with discounts available. Call ext. 3233 for reservations.
  • Opera star Karla Burns will perform during the 22nd annual Renaissance Feast Friday-Saturday, Dec. 3-4, at the Rhatigan Student Center. While at WSU, the 1981 graduate was in the first Renaissance Feast as a wine wench. The feast begins at 6 p.m. and features a seven-course meal with entertainment by WSU's Madrigal and Chamber Singers. This feast also marks the last for music professor Harrison "Bud" Boughton who will retire in the spring after 38 years at WSU. He has been music director for 21 of the 22 feasts. Tickets are $26, with group discounts available. Call ext. 3475 or stop by the RSC reservations office for tickets.
  • Nab some drinks at the Heskett Center's annual NAB (non-alcoholic beverage) party 2-4 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 1.
  • Boughton also will mark his last time directing the annual Candlelight Christmas Concert by the Madrigal and Chamber Singers at 4:30 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 5, and 7:30 p.m. Monday, Dec. 6, in Wiedemann Hall. Admission starts at $4 with discounts available; free to the WSU community. Call ext. 3233 for tickets.
  • Faculty and staff are invited to the annual holiday brunch, hosted by Don and Shirley Beggs and the president's administrative staff, from 9-11 a.m. Tuesday, Dec. 7, in the RSC ballroom.
