Waugh collection keeps
growing
By Julie Rausch The newest acquisitions to the Ulrich Museum's collection are "Shallow Cove" by world renowned marine painter Frederick Judd Waugh (1861-1940), and a portrait of a young woman holding roses by Frederick's father, portraitist Samuel Waugh (1814-84). The donors are John and Janet Waugh from Pinehurst, N.C. They have no relation to the Waugh artists, just a deep affinity for their works. "When my brother and I were younger we became aware of Frederick Judd Waugh's works, and we both like seascapes," said Waugh. "We thought someday maybe we'd get the chance to own one." Unfortunately his brother passed away before that happened. The Waughs bought "Shallow Cove" in 1984 at a gallery in New York City. Early television pioneer and entertainer Arthur Godfrey had previously owned the painting. They bought the Samuel Waugh portrait at an auction in Portland, Ore., in 1989. Waugh became aware of Edwin Ulrich through a mutual acquaintance shortly after he purchased the seascape. He once visited with Ulrich by phone about art collecting and their mutual admiration for the Waugh artists. Ulrich was known for owning the most complete collection of Frederick Waugh's paintings in the world. He gave more than 300 Waugh paintings to WSU's Endowment Association in 1974, which became the foundation for the Ulrich Museum's permanent collection. Both Waugh and Ulrich wanted a permanent home for their paintings. Despite the fact that neither man had ties to Wichita or WSU, they both had the desire to extend to others, in an educational setting, works of art to enhance the lives of others. "There comes a time in life to divest yourself of what we've collected," said Waugh, "and this is the time. We thought this was the place where it would be the best custodial care."
