Opera singer Karla Burns scheduled to visit WSU

By Nikki Hansson

Distinguished Wichita State University alumna Karla Burns has appeared at some of the most exciting venues in the world. In addition to her classical and musical theater appearances on Broadway, she has performed with the Paris Opera and the Teatro Real in Madrid, Spain.

As part of the Forum Board Lecture Series, Burns will appear on the stage of the Hughes Metropolitan Complex Monday, Jan. 24, at 7:30 p.m. All Forum Board lectures are free and open to the public.

Burns’ credits include two Broadway performances of Shakespeare’s "The Comedy of Errors" at both the Lincoln Center and Shakespeare in the Park. Her role in the 1982-83 Broadway revival of "Show Boat" earned her the Drama Desk award and a Tony nomination.

In addition to her extensive list of operatic repertoire, theater and television credits, Burns tours in "Hi Hat, Hattie," a one-woman show based on the biography of Oscar winner Hattie McDaniel.

Groups of 20 or more may make reservations for the Jan. 24 lecture by calling 978-3142 or e-mailing hansson@twsuvm.uc.twsu.edu.
