Taking a community’s pulse

Before the Wichita public school district decided to ask for a bond referendum, it wanted to get a reading on how Wichitans felt about the schools and on what it would take to change their tax support.

USD 259 had the ideal resource to go to here at WSU – a public administration faculty member who specializes in what’s called "citizen demand assessment."

School planning committee to meet at WSU

When more than 7,200 Wichitans responded to a survey conducted by WSU on Wichita public schools, an overwhelming majority indicated they’d be willing to support increased taxes if they had more of a say in the planning to spend that money.

Beggs gets recommendations on FY 2001 budget

Opera singer Karla Burns scheduled to visit WSU

Distinguished Wichita State University alumna Karla Burns has appeared at some of the most exciting venues in the world. In addition to her classical and musical theater appearances on Broadway, she has performed with the Paris Opera and the Teatro Real in Madrid, Spain.

As part of the Forum Board Lecture Series, Burns will appear on the stage of the Hughes Metropolitan Complex Monday, Jan. 24, at 7:30 p.m. All Forum Board lectures are free and open to the public.

A chamber music quintet, Amerigo Ensemble, will perform at 7:30 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 22, in Miller Concert Hall as part of WSU’s Connoisseur Series.

  Bookstore reopens

The University Bookstore will have its grand reopening at 11 a.m. Monday, Dec. 13. The bookstore underwent its first major renovation in its 30-year history this year. The lower level of the bookstore opened in August. The upper level will include various specialty areas.


Wish upon a star for more

Lake Afton Public Observatory, run by WSU’s Fairmount Center for Science and Mathematics Education, will increase its admission prices by $1 starting in January. Current prices are $2 for adults and $1 for children ages 6-12. Those under 6 are free, and will continue to be admitted free when the new charges go into effect.


Sharing some time

The Office of Human Resources is asking for donations of sick and vacation leave for its shared leave program. Classified employees need to have vacation leave balances of at least 80 hours and sick leave balances of 480 hours after donations. Faculty and unclassified professionals can only donate up to 80 hours of sick leave each fiscal year, if they have a balance of at least 480 hours after donating. Inside on hiatus

This is the last issue of Inside WSU for the fall 1999 semester. It will resume publishing with the Jan. 20 issue. The deadline for submissions for that issue is Monday, Jan. 10. See the staff box on page 8 for contact information. Campus news updates in the meantime will be made by WSU’s online news service, found by clicking on the news digest icon at www.wichita.edu.


Closing for the holidays

The university will close most of its offices for an extended holiday break starting at 5 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 22, and reopening Monday, Jan. 3. Some services that will remain open, with different than normal hours, include Postal Services and Ablah Library. A number of services, including the library, Heskett Center and Rhatigan Student Center, will operate different hours during the semester break, as well. The Ulrich Museum will remain open noon-5 p.m., except Christmas and New Year’s days, during the holiday and semester break.


Check messages during the break

Standard voice mail service retains both new and old messages for 10 days only, unless you make a special request. Telecommunications staff advise you to check messages during the holidays – you can call into the system from any phone anywhere at anytime.
