WSU-TV expands local programming

By Joe Kleinsasser

Steve Worley, left, producer/editor, and Greg Matthias, manager of television services, will produce three new shows airing on WSU-TV in October.

A small and ambitious staff is producing three new television programs for WSU-TV.

Tom Brock, director of television at Wichita State, says the university has many interesting stories to tell.

"These three programs provide a good outlet for us to tell those stories," says Brock.

The new programs, "WSU-TV Archive," "WSU Insight" and "On Campus," will debut in October. The two full-time staff producing the shows are Steve Worley and Greg Matthias.

"WSU-TV Archive" will air Sundays at 8 p.m. beginning Oct. 3. Programs will be rebroadcast Thursdays at 8 p.m.

After 19 years of recording and cablecasting programs from campus, the TV station will dip into its library to reprise some concerts, performances, lectures and interviews of past years for "WSU-TV Archive."

The Oct. 3 opening program will feature a 1983 interview with Kansas native and noted photographer and filmmaker Gordon Parks.

The program also will include a 1981 interview with Edwin A. Ulrich, primary benefactor of the university’s art museum.

Martin Bush, former vice president for academic resource development and former Ulrich Museum director, conducted both interviews.

In November, "WSU-TV Archive" will celebrate National Aviation History month by reviving the 1985 three-part series "An Oral History of Aviation in Wichita."

The late Dorothy Woods Belden, a former Wichita Eagle reporter, examined the early role of aviation in Wichita from the perspective of Wichitans who lived through that period.

"WSU Insight" is a newsmagazine-style program, spotlighting the people and programs at Wichita State. The program will premiere at 8 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 5. The program will be rebroadcast Fridays at 8 p.m. The monthly show will be updated weekly to promote upcoming campus events.

The first program will feature Michael Palmer’s return to Wichita as interim director of the university orchestra; Shocker academic all-American volleyball player Michelle Hallagin; WSU graduate student Emily Weiss’ research with service dogs; former Shocker basketball great Antoine Carr’s recent talk at an Alumni Association breakfast; and a remembrance of the football players, coaches and supporters who died in an airplane crash in Colorado Oct. 2, 1970.

"WSU Insight" will be paired with "Studio B," a weekly news program produced by students in the Elliott School of Communication. "Studio B" airs live at 3 p.m. Fridays with a rebroadcast at 8:30 p.m. Fridays and Tuesdays.

As its name implies, "On Campus" is a recording of special events on the WSU campus or in the community. The program will air at 8 p.m. Wednesdays. Each program will be repeated the following Wednesday.

The initial program Oct. 6 will feature music from the Faculty Artist Series concert "Homage to Francis Poulenc." The program will be rebroadcast at 8 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 13. A new show will air every two weeks.

Upcoming programs will include coverage of the Wichita Economic Outlook Conference Oct. 20 and 27; Forum Board lecture by Dee Dee Myers Nov. 3 and 10; and KMUW’s 50th anniversary concert featuring Blue Plate Special and Druha Trova Nov. 17 and Dec. 1.

WSU-TV is available on a number of channels to cable subscribers.
