VP screening committee President Beggs has launched WSU’s search for a
new vice president for academic affairs and research by naming a 13-member
screening committee. Famous for combining
theatrical jazz, contemporary dance and classical ballet styles, Hubbard
Street Dance Chicago will perform at 8 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 2, at Century
II Concert Hall in Wichita. The performance is part of Wichita State’s
Connoisseur Series, sponsored by the College of Fine
Arts. Writing series founder returns to WSU The founder of the Kay Closson
Women Writing Series, sponsored by the Center for Women’s Studies, will
return to WSU to kick off the series this year. Strike up the bands for KMUW’s 50th anniversary
celebration Two bluegrass bands, one local
and one from the Czech Republic, will be featured in a concert sponsored
by Wichita State’s KMUW Radio at 7 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 30, in Miller
Concert Hall. Cardiac doctor to speak at WSU Dr. Vincent Gott, a former Wichita University football player, has earned a heart-pumping reputation in the field of cardiac surgery. Inspired by mentors such as Hazel Branch and well-known physician D. Cramer Reed at his alma mater, he has been involved in many firsts within the field. Gott is the speaker in WSU’s

Wichita State is reminded of the tragic plane crash that caused the deaths
of 31 football players, coaches and team boosters Oct. 2, 1970. On its way
to Logan, Utah, for a game with Utah State University, the plane crashed
into a mountainside near Silver Plume, Colo. Artist
has developed a palette and palate for landscapes The visual stimulation during a recent vacation
to Portugal provided an irresistible subject matter for Leeah Joo,
resulting in an exhibition at Clayton Staples Gallery until Oct. 22. The
gallery, free to the public, is open weekdays 9 a.m.-5

No parking Part of the Rhatigan Student Center parking lot will be closed Friday, Sept. 24, to accommodate parking for a career fair being held at the RSC. ‘Free’ food, free games By donating three non-perishable food items, WSU faculty, staff and families can be admitted free to four upcoming volleyball games. The Missouri Valley Conference games on Sept. 24 and 25 and Oct. 8 and 9 begin at 7 p.m. in Levitt Arena. The food donations will help the Kansas Food Bank Warehouse’s Race Against Hunger drive. It’s an open house party The Wichita Radio Reading Service plans to celebrate its new location and honor those who helped with their move to the Hughes Metropolitan Complex. Faculty and staff are invited to the open house 3:30-6 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 6. The official dedication starts at 4 p.m. Door prizes will be given every half-hour. Preschool slots available The Speech-Language-Hearing Clinic can accept two more typically developing children, ages 2 1/2 to 5 years, in its interdisciplinary preschool program. The preschool, which meets 9-11 a.m. Tuesdays and Thursdays, got under way this week. The weekly charge is $30. Call Debbie Froelich, ext. 3331. Seeking award winners The Alumni Association is taking nominations for its awards given to alumni, faculty and staff or friends of the university until Monday, Sept. 27. One award honors current or retired non-faculty or non-administrator employees, while another award recognizes a past or current faculty member or administrator. For more information, call Nikki Hansson, ext. 3834. Put on the pink ribbon The WSU community is participating in Lee National Denim Day for Breast Cancer Awareness Oct. 8. Each person donating at least $5 will get a pink ribbon pin to wear with their jeans Oct. 8. Send tax-deductible donations to Ellen Horn, box 85. A ribbon and receipt will be sent to you. Make checks payable to the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation. The national goal is to raise $6 million for research; the WSU goal is $1,500. Last year, the WSU community raised $1,170.
