Another good fund-raising year
By Lynette Murphy
Private donors gave the WSU Endowment
Association a total of $8,687,605 in fiscal year 1999, making it the
second best fund-raising year since 1995. The 10-year average for
the Endowment Association is $8.1 million.
The fiscal year ran July 1, 1998,
through June 30.
In all, 12,197 individuals,
corporations and foundations contributed to the fortuitous year.
Highlights of the year include:
- The university's largest cash
corporate gift in history was received from The Boeing Co. In
January, Boeing pledged $1.5 million for an endowed
professorship of global learning. Half of that amount was
received this fiscal year.
- Gifts in-kind were higher than in
years past. WSU received $264,239 in-kind, primarily due to
media promotion donated for the Gordon Parks exhibition shown
this summer at the Ulrich Museum.
- In addition to the total raised,
$2.1 million was pledged and 16 new estate gifts were booked,
which promises future growth for the institution.

One of the gifts made to WSU's
Endowment Association this year was a $75,000 pledge from the Frank
and Betty Hedrick Foundation for a DEXA bone scanner to help detect
and prevent the loss of bone density. Mike Rogers, recently
appointed director of WSU's Center for Physical Activity and Aging,
uses the machine to measure the bone density of retired faculty
member and center participant Sue Bair. |
